Some Recent Developments

Higher strength and modulus technical cellulose fibres have been spun from phosphoric acid by the Acordis research group of Boerstoel et al. [54] giving fibres with strengths of 1.7 GPa, moduli of 44 GPa and elongations at break of 5% [54]. This fibre B never went into production though, probably due to the impractical solvent. Concentrated acids are, however. 

A liquid crystalline system for fibre spinning of cellulose carbamate from NMMO solution is described in reference [55], Cellulose is regenerated analogous to the viscose method (derivative process) and fibres are obtained with strengths of almost 1 GPa and moduli of 49 GPa. Compared to fibre B , a much easier process is used, which is much closer to industrially implemented dope preparation (similar to the viscose process) and spinning procedures (from the NMMO process). 

The manufacture of cellulose blown films from NNMO solution [48] was mentioned in Section 3.5.2 and mechanical values of a more anisotropic film as well as a more balanced type are included in Table 3.4 demonstrating the versatility of the process.

This article is not intended to give a comprehensive overview over the entire field, but will concentrate on some recent developments and highlights as perceived by the author. Only most recent references will be given where most of the previous work will be found. There are several books, proceedings and review articles available on earlier work and on specific aspects of polymers at interfaces [1-13]. In particular the area of tethered chains in solution or melt is covered by another article in this book [14].

We have reviewed here, in the brief space available, some recent developments in phase equilibrium representations for polymer solutions. With these recent developments, reliable tools have become available for the polymer process designer to use in considering effects of phase equilibrium properly. 

The previous sections have described methods to obtain 2-pyridone scaffolds. Both in the construction of new materials and especially in drug design and development, there is a desire to be able to derivatize and optimize the lead structures. In the following sections, some recent developments using MAOS to effectively substitute and derivatize 2-pyridone heterocycles are described. The reaction types described range from electrophilic-, and nucleophilic reactions to transition metal-catalyzed transformations (Fig. 7). To get an overview of how these systems behave, their characteristics imder conventional heating is first described in brevity.

Tetrazolium salts are an important class of leuco dyes that have found a wide range of applications. They are unique among the synthetic leuco dyes in that the colored form of the dye is the reduced form rather than the oxidized form. The proton-transfer behaviour of most oxygen and nitrogen acids follows an extremely simple pattern (Eigen, 1964). Our purpose in this section will be to provide a brief summary of this behaviour, to point out features that are not yet fully understood, and to consider some recent developments.
