Widely used algorithms for calculating the molecular and accessible surfaces were developed by Connolly [Connolly 1983a, b], and others [e.g. Richmond 1984] have described formulae for the calculation of exact or approximate values of the surface area. There are many ways to represent surfaces, some of which are illustrated in Figure 1.7 (colour plate section). As shown, it may also be possible to endow a surface with a translucent quality, which enables the molecule inside the surface to be displayed. Clipping can also be used... 

The oil that remains is only slightly dark. Definitely translucent which is always lovely. One can then add some water to take up the unreacted salts and separate the oil from this. If an emulsion forms it can be busted up with some 10% HCl. That isosafrole is clean enough to proceed with but it can of course be distilled for ultra purity. 

Key properties are its flexibility, translucency, and resistance to all known chemicals except molten alkali metals, elemental fluorine and fluorine precursors at elevated temperatures, and concentrated perchloric acid. It withstands temperatures from —270° to 250°C and may be sterilized repeatedly by all known chemical and thermal methods. 

Polypropylene is translucent and autoclavable and has no known solvent at room temperature. It is slightly more susceptible to strong oxidizing agents than polyethylene.

Optical Properties and Radiation Effects. Within the range of wavelengths measured (uv, visible, and near-ir radiation), Teflon PFA fluorocarbon film transmits slightly less energy than FEP film (29) (Table 6). In thin sections, the resin is colorless and transparent in thicker sections, it becomes translucent. It is highly transparent to it radiation uv absorption is low in thin sections. Weather-O-Meter tests indicate unlimited outdoor life. 

The perfluorovinyl ether comonomer used for PEA is expensive, as is PEA. Most PEA grades are sold as extmded, translucent cubes in various colors at 47.9—60.3/kg. Some PEA types are also marketed in nonextmded forms. 

Physical Properties. Mahc acid crystallines from aqueous solutions as white, translucent, anhydrous crystal. The S(—) isomer melts at 100-103°C (1) and the R(+) isomer at 98-99°C (2). On heating, D,L-mahc acid decomposes at ca 180°C by forming fumaric acid and maleic anhydride. Under normal conditions, malic acid is stable under conditions of high humidity, it is hygroscopic. 

Electrical trees consist of visible permanent hoUow channels, resulting from decomposition of the material, and show up clearly in polyethylene and other translucent soHd dielectrics when examined with an optical microscope. Eresh, unstained water trees appear diffuse and temporary. Water trees consist of very fine paths along which moisture has penetrated under the action of a voltage gradient. Synthetic Marble. Synthetic marble-like resin products are prepared by casting or molding a highly filled monomer mixture or monomer—polymer symp. When only one smooth surface is required, a continuous casting process using only one endless stainless steel belt can be used (52,53). Typically on the order of 60 wt % inorganic filler is used. The inorganic fillers, such as aluminum hydroxide, calcium carbonate, etc, are selected on the basis of cost, and such properties as the translucence, chemical and water resistance, and ease of subsequent fabrication (54,55). 

Plastic Sheet. Poly(methyl methacrylate) plastic sheet is manufactured in a wide variety of types, including cleat and colored transparent, cleat and colored translucent, and colored semiopaque. Various surface textures ate also produced. Additionally, grades with improved weatherabiUty (added uv absorbers), mat resistance, crazing resistance, impact resistance, and flame resistance ate available. Selected physical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) sheet ate Hsted in Table 12 (102). 

Optical Properties. Owing to the high crystallinity of HDPE, most thick-waHed articles made from HDPE resins are opaque. Significant surface roughness can also add to the opacity. Thin HDPE film, in contrast, is translucent, but its transparency is significantly lower than that of LDPE or LLDPE film. The ultraviolet transmission limit of HDPE is around 230 nm. 

Defoamers. Foam is a common problem in papermaking systems (27). It is caused by surface-active agents which are present in the pulp slurry or in the chemical additives. In addition, partially hydrophobic soHd materials can function as foam stabilizers. Foam can exist as surface foam or as a combination of surface foam and entrained air bubbles. Surface foam usually can be removed by water or steam showers and causes few problems. Entrained air bubbles, however, can slow drainage of the stock and hence reduce machine speed. Another serious effect is the formation of translucent circular spots in the finished sheet caused by permanently entrained air. 

Polyamides, often also lefeiied to as nylons, are liigli polymers which contain the amide repeat linkage in the polymer backbone. They are generally characterized as tough, translucent, semicrystalline polymers that ate moderately low cost and easily manipulated commercially by melt processing.
