In neutral and alkaline environments, the magnesium hydroxide product can form a surface film which offers considerable protection to the pure metal or its common alloys. Electron diffraction studies of the film formed ia humid air iadicate that it is amorphous, with the oxidation rate reported to be less than 0.01 /rni/yr. If the humidity level is sufficiently high, so that condensation occurs on the surface of the sample, the amorphous film is found to contain at least some crystalline magnesium hydroxide (bmcite). The crystalline magnesium hydroxide is also protective ia deionized water at room temperature. The aeration of the water has Httie or no measurable effect on the corrosion resistance. However, as the water temperature is iacreased to 100°C, the protective capacity of the film begias to erode, particularly ia the presence of certain cathodic contaminants ia either the metal or the water (121,122). [Pg.332]

Radiative Heat Transfer Heat-transfer equipment using the radiative mechanism for divided solids is constructed as a table which is stationary, as with trays, or moving, as with a belt, and/or agitated, as with a vibrated pan, to distribute and expose the burden in a plane parallel to (but not in contacl with) the plane of the radiant-heat sources. Presence of air is not necessary (see Sec. 12 for vacuum-shelf dryers and Sec. 22 for resubhmation). In fact, if air in the intervening space has a high humidity or CO9 content, it acts as an energy absorber, thereby depressing the performance. [Pg.1060]

A rolling mill drive motor failed in service. Investigation revealed the motor was short circuited by water in-leakage. This forced a prolonged shutdown, as the motor could not be replaced on site. High humidity was initially assumed to be the problem. Upon close inspection of the motor air coolers, however, it was determined that water leaked from headboxes into the air plenum spaces. Severe corrosion at tube rolls was observed (Fig. 2.9). [Pg.35]

The work required to drive the turbine eompressor is reduced by lowering the compressor inlet temperature thus increasing the output work of the turbine. Figure 2-35 is a schematic of the evaporative gas turbine and its effect on the Brayton cycle. The volumetric flow of most turbines is constant and therefore by increasing the mass flow, power increases in an inverse proportion to the temperature of the inlet air. The psychometric chart shown shows that the cooling is limited especially in high humid conditions. It is a very low cost option and can be installed very easily. This technique does not however increase the efficiency of the turbine. The turbine inlet temperature is lowered by about 18 °F (10 °C), if the outside temperature is around 90 °F (32 °C). The cost of an evaporative cooling system runs around 50/kw. [Pg.97]

The cooling of the inlet air using an evaporative cycle, the simplest of the cycles, and which can be put into operation with the least outlay in capital is not very useful in operation in high humidity areas. The system would cost between 300,000- 500,000 per turbine thus amounting to a cost of 135 per KW. [Pg.105]
