Characterization General

Organic acids are typical products of microbial metabolism. All organic acids occur naturally in a variety of vegetable and animal substrates and can, therefore, be either naturally present as constituents of foods as a result of normal biochemical metabolic processes, direct addition as acid-ulants, hydrolysis, or bacterial growth, or can later be added directly or indirectly to the products (Gomis, 1992). [Pg.21]

The energy needed to reach the maximum is approximately by a factor 5 larger than at 257 nm [55, 56]. From the growth curves, i.e. from the exposure E which was needed to produce a certain efficiency r, the holographic sensitivity S of the material given by [Pg.149]

When E, coli is treated with lysozyme which hydrolyzes the peptidoglycan, the outer membrane is detached from the cytoplasmic membrane (see Fig. 1). Since the outer membrane contains a large amount of lipopolysaccharide having a long polysaccharide chain, the outer [Pg.352]

Sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis separates proteins primarily on the basis of their molecular weights and is an extremely useful technique for analyzing membrane proteins. When the outer membrane is analyzed by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, four major protein peaks are detected, as opposed to the numerous peaks observed in the case of the cytoplasmic membrane. The exact total number of protein components in the outer membrane has not yet been established. [Pg.353]

An important question which now arises is whether the proteins in [Pg.353]

Each peak may still consist of two or more different proteins. However, the evidence described above demonstrates that the protein(s) in each peak belongs to a distinct structural or functional group of outer membrane proteins which shows the same sensitivity to proteolytic enzymes or solubilization in detergents. When outer membrane proteins are separated using slab gel, as opposed to disc gel, electrophoresis, many more bands appear. However, the appearance of more bands does not necessarily mean the existence of more different polypeptides. Each new band may be composed of the same polypeptide with a different modification—such as a different carbohydrate group, but they may be involved in the same function. The reasons for the changes of the apparent molecular weights will be discussed in the next section. [Pg.355]

Crude oil is generally characterized by a TBP analysis whose results are expressed as temperatures equivalent to atmospheric pressure as a function of the fraction of volume and weight distilled... [Pg.106]

Volatility is generally characterized by a distillation curve (the quantity distilled as a function of temperature). Often, only the initial and final boiling points are taken into account along with, possibly, a few intermediary points. [Pg.273]

The polarization P is given in tenns of E by the constitutive relation of the material. For the present discussion, we assume that the polarization P r) depends only on the field E evaluated at the same position r. This is the so-called dipole approximation. In later discussions, however, we will consider, in some specific cases, the contribution of a polarization that has a non-local spatial dependence on the optical field. Once we have augmented the system of equation B 1.5.16. equation B 1.5.17. equation B 1.5.18. equation B 1.5.19 and equation B 1.5.20 with the constitutive relation for the dependence of Pon E, we may solve for the radiation fields. This relation is generally characterized tlirough the use of linear and nonlinear susceptibility tensors, the subject to which we now turn. [Pg.1271]

High performance fibers are generally characterized by remarkable unit tensile strength and resistance to heat, flame, and chemical agents that normally degrade conventional fibers. Applications include uses in the aerospace, biomedical, civil engineering, constmction, protective apparel, geotextiles, and electronic areas. [Pg.64]

Organic isocyanates are generally characterized with respect to NCO content. A number of spectroscopic and chemical methods for isocyanate deterrnination are available (96). [Pg.457]

Hard-burned lime is a quicklime that is calcined at high temperature and is generally characterized by relatively high density and moderate-to-low chemical reactivity. [Pg.164]

Polyamides, often also lefeiied to as nylons, are liigli polymers which contain the amide repeat linkage in the polymer backbone. They are generally characterized as tough, translucent, semicrystalline polymers that ate moderately low cost and easily manipulated commercially by melt processing. [Pg.215]

No special effort will henceforth be made to interpret examples as illustrations of properties in the general characterization of operations. [Pg.266]

Fischer-type carbene complexes, generally characterized by the formula (CO)5M=C(X)R (M=Cr, Mo, W X=7r-donor substitutent, R=alkyl, aryl or unsaturated alkenyl and alkynyl), have been known now for about 40 years. They have been widely used in synthetic reactions [37,51-58] and show a very good reactivity especially in cycloaddition reactions [59-64]. As described above, Fischer-type carbene complexes are characterized by a formal metal-carbon double bond to a low-valent transition metal which is usually stabilized by 7r-acceptor substituents such as CO, PPh3 or Cp. The electronic structure of the metal-carbene bond is of great interest because it determines the reactivity of the complex [65-68]. Several theoretical studies have addressed this problem by means of semiempirical [69-73], Hartree-Fock (HF) [74-79] and post-HF [80-83] calculations and lately also by density functional theory (DFT) calculations [67, 84-94]. Often these studies also compared Fischer-type and... [Pg.6]

The nitrogenase proteins are generally characterized by two letters indicating the species and strains of bacteria and the numerals 1 for the MoFe protein and 2 for the Fe protein. Thus, the Fe protein from Azotobacter vinelandii is Av2 and the MoFe protein from Klebsiella pneumoniae is Kpl. [Pg.163]

Very little is known as yet of the chemistry of cyclopentadienylthallium(I) and the related compounds listed in Table I. The parent compound gives tribromocyclopentane on treatment with bromine and the hexabromo derivative with potassium hypobromite 112). By far the most important use discovered so far for these organothallium(I) compounds is the preparation of metallocenes and cyclopentadiene-transition metal complexes. These preparations are, in general, characterized by manipulative simplicity and high yields, and details of the reactions reported thus far are summarized in Tables II-IV. [Pg.152]

Very recently, HPLC with fluorescence detection was recommended for improving detection sensitivities of betalains. " While this technique may be worthwhile for betaxanthin analyses, its use for betacyanins cannot be recommended. Although this technique represents a worthwhile approach requiring low amounts of solvent and sample and generally characterized by a high separation efhciency, only one study dealt with the use of capillary zone electrophoresis for betalain analyses. ... [Pg.514]

In principle, polymers equivalent to those obtained from vinyl and divinyl monomers may be synthesized by this method. The product in the above example possesses the same chain structure as polyethylene. The polymerization process, notwithstanding the likelihood of a metal alkyl intermediate, should conform satisfactorily to stepwise condensation. However, the product, and those obtained by Friedel-Crafts condensation as well, lack the recurrent functional groups which generally characterize condensation polymers. [Pg.62]

First, consider the field of a homogeneous sphere with radius a. Taking into account the spherical symmetry of the mass distribution, it is natural to introduce a spherical system of coordinates with its origin at the center of the sphere, Fig. 1.5c. Then, the vector g p) is in general characterized by three components ... [Pg.42]

Fatigue of muscles is found post-exercise and in some patients with disorders of limb or respiratory muscles. Peripheral muscle fatigue is generally characterized by the changes in force frequency relationships that occur. The process is traditionally divided into a failure of force production at either low or high frequencies of electrical stimulation. [Pg.176]

The effectiveness of the elution step can be tailored by using a single eluent, pulses of different eluents, or eluent gradients. These systems are generally characterized by mild desorption conditions. If the eluting agent is bound to the protein, it can be dissociated by desalting on a gel filtration column or by diafiltration. [Pg.82]

Serum electrolytes should be monitored in patients with CKD for the development of metabolic acidosis. Metabolic acidosis in patients with CKD is generally characterized by an elevated anion gap greater than 17 mEq/L (17 mmol/L), due to the accumulation of phosphate, sulfate, and other organic anions. [Pg.392]
