Toners

Selenium is used in Xerography for reproducing and copying documents, letters, etc. It is used by the glass industry to decolorize glass and to make ruby-colored glasses and enamels. It is also used as a photographic toner, and as an additive to stainless steel. [Pg.97]

After the hair is bleached it has an uimatural straw-like color and is then dyed to the desired tone with either a semipermanent or a permanent hair color product. The dye products designed to color bleached hair to a natural looking blonde shade are called toners. [Pg.457]

In other areas, POD has been used to improve the wear resistance of a mbber latex binder by incorporation of 25% of Oksalon fibers. Heat-resistant laminate films, made by coating a polyester film with POD, have been used as electrical insulators and show good resistance to abrasion and are capable of 126% elongation. In some instances, thin sheets of PODs have been used as mold release agents. For this appHcation a resin is placed between the two sheets of POD, which is then pressed in a mold, and the sheets simply peel off from the object and mold after the resin has cured. POD-based membranes exhibit salt rejection properties and hence find potential as reverse osmosis membranes in the purification of seawater. PODs have also been used in the manufacturing of electrophotographic plates as binders between the toner and plate. These improved binders produce sharper images than were possible before. [Pg.535]

Toners ate full strength undiluted pigments used to strengthen tinctorially weak batches of pigments. Occasionally, dyes ate utilized as toners. The most common pigments used in ink manufacture ate as foUows. [Pg.248]

Inorganic Color Pigments. Iron blue is made in several shades, such as Mdori blue and Pmssian blue. It is economical, but has poor alkaH resistance. It is also used as a toner in some black inks. [Pg.248]

Soluble Fluorescent Polymers. Several pigment manufacturers have developed fluorescent polymers iatended to be used as a solution for apphcation to various substrates. These toners come ia both solvent soluble and alkaline water-soluble forms. [Pg.302]

For example, Day-Glo HM Series toners come ia a range of colors suitable for flexographic and gravure inks of the solvent-base type. The Radiant GF Series and Lawter HVT Series are also suitable for this type of apphcation (see Table 2). Generally, these toners are of the formaldehyde—sulfonamide type and requite oxygenated solvents, primarily alcohol—ester blends, for proper solution. For appHcations such as flexographic printing on film, these materials are modified with other resias such as nitrocellulose or polyamides ia the finished ink. [Pg.302]

In addition to the solvent soluble toners, alkah water-soluble toners have been produced. These types include WST produced by Day-Glo and Aquabest produced by Radiant Color. These toners are dissolved ia water which contains a portion of ammonia and, if necessary, some isopropyl alcohol. These toners can be used as binders or additional binders and other additives can be added to give the ink the desired properties. These toners are condensation-type polymers other than the formaldehyde types. [Pg.302]

Flexographic Inks. Fluorescent toners such as the Radiant GF, Lawter HVT, and Day-Glo HM and HMS Series toners are used in flexographic ink formulations. These products are soluble in blends of alcohol (80%) and ester solvents (20%) and are compatible with modifying materials such as nitroceUulose resins and acryHc solution polymers. Flexographic inks of this type are used most commonly to print products such as ceUophane and polyethylene film for packaging, and also to print paper products such as gift wrap and price labels. [Pg.303]

Water-based flexo inks can be formulated with either a soluble toner or with the Day-Glo EPX Series which is a tme pigment and can be formulated like a conventional pigment dispersion. The Radiant Aquabest or the Day-Glo WST can be formulated in an alkaline water-soluble system to yield strong inks. They have limited shelf life and inferior fade, but do not necessarily requite additional binder. Day-Glo EPX must be formulated with a binder such as a hard resin or can be used with one of the soluble toners such as WST. The EPX Series has several advantages over soluble toners such as much superior fade, exceUent ink stabiHty, and some hiding power over kraft-type papers. A disadvantage of the EPX is its lower tinctorial strength than other fluorescent toners. [Pg.303]

Pigment Red 57, calcium salt [5281-04-9] 15850 1 BONA (Ca salt) (Lithol Rubine B or 4B toner) coupling of dia2oti2ed 2- amino-5-methyl-ben2enesulfonic acid with 3- hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, foUowed by salt formation... [Pg.20]

Lakes are either dry toner pigments that are extended with a soHd diluent, or an organic pigment obtained by precipitation of a water-soluble dye, frequendy a sulfonic acid, by an inorganic cation or an inorganic substrate such as aluminum hydrate. [Pg.30]

Phenylenediamines are used in a variety of other appHcations, such as corrosion inhibitors, cross-linking agents for epoxy resins, toners for electrostatic image development (35), and to improve wrinkle resistance of cellulose acetate fibers (36). [Pg.256]
