When initiator is first added the reaction medium remains clear while particles 10 to 20 nm in diameter are formed. As the reaction proceeds the particle size increases, giving the reaction medium a white milky appearance. When a thermal initiator, such as AIBN or benzoyl peroxide, is used the reaction is autocatalytic. This contrasts sharply with normal homogeneous polymerizations in which the rate of polymerization decreases monotonicaHy with time. Studies show that three propagation reactions occur simultaneously to account for the anomalous auto acceleration (17). In the present work it has been shown that on-line coupling of flowthrough fractionation in RCC with ICP-EAS detection enables not only the fast and efficient fractionation of trace elements (TE) in environmental solids to be achieved but allows real-time studies on the leaching process be made. A novel five-step sequential extraction scheme was tested in on-line mode. The optimal conditions for the fractionation were chosen. Investigating elution curves provides important information on the efficiency of the reagents used, the leaching time needed for the separation of each fraction, and the potential mobility of HM forms. [Pg.459]

The value of the coefficient of turbulent diffusion, D, depends upon the air change rate in the ventilated space and the method of air supply. Studies by Posokhin show that approximate D values for locations outside supply air jets is equal to 0.025 m-/s. Air disturbance caused by operator or robot movement results in an increase in the D value of at least two times. Stodola in his great book of 1925 [4] describes several gas turbines for power generation, and Whittle spent much time studying this work carefully. Stodola tells how in 1904, two French engineers, Armengaud and Lemale, built one of the first gas turbines, but it did little more than turn itself over. It appears they used some steam injection and the small work output produced extra compressed air-but not much. The critical incident technique was first described by Flanagan (1954) and was used during World War II to analyze "near-miss incidents." The war time studies of "pilot errors" by Fitts and Jones (1947) are the classic studies using this technique. The technique can be applied in different ways. The most common application is to ask individuals to describe situations involving errors made by themselves or their colleagues. Another, more systematic approach is to get them to fill in reports on critical incidents on a weekly basis. One recent development of the technique has been used in the aviation world, to solicit reports from aircraft crews in an anonjmrous or confidential way, on incidents in aircraft operations. In the course of studying the bromination reactions of the bicyclic systems we noticed that the reaction temperature has a dramatic influence on the product distribution. Increasing of the temperature gives non-rearranged reaction products (refs. 1,2). For this reason, we submitted 1 to high temperature bromination. To a solution of 1 in decalin at 150 C was added a hot solution of bromine in decalin in one portion. The colour of bromine disappeared immediately. After silica gel chromatography followed by fractional crystallization we isolated four products 2-6 in yields 8, 35, 37, and 9 % respectively. The structure of these compounds has been elucidated on the basis of spectral data by iH NMR and NMR experiments and by comparison with those reported in the literature.
