The Information is Available

One criticism of this approach is that, in selecting a new active molecule by means of the same pharmacological models as were used for the original compound, one will inevitably end up with a compound presenting an identical activity profile thus, the innovative character of such a research is very modest.

In addition to printed compilations, more and more of the information is available on CD-ROM and latterly also on-line on the internet. This last is a feature of the service provided by MSI, Materials Science International Services in Stuttgart. This organisation, under the working name of MSIT Workplace (http //www.msiwp.com), provides information on the entire corpus of phase diagram compilations. 

When the information is available, the Corrosion Guide provides detailed corrosion data on the preparation of various chemicals. For example, in the section on sulphuric acid, the corrosion rates for several alloys are given when used at various stages of an actual process involving that acid. In the section on phosphoric acid, cognisance of the method of production shows also the influence of the minor constituents as well as the major chemical on the corrosion of various materials. Nevertheless, it must be emphasised that even a book as comprehensive as the Corrosion Guide can only cover a limited number of all the possible chemicals used in practice. 

This preliminary assessment will need to be updated as and when further information becomes available. It should favor sensitivity over specificity so that a borderline possible-probable case is classified as probable rather than possible to make certain that the case is not lost when at a later stage the probable cases are picked out as a signal. A full assessment when all the information is available can then rectify any misclassifications. 

The risk assessment framework we have described for chemical toxicity is applicable to microbial risk assessment. Once the information is available on microbial hazards, which are for the most part acute (immediately observable) conditions resulting from acute (one-time) exposures, and their dose (pathogen count)-response characteristics, we should be ready to assess the risks associated with any dose of interest. Hazard information for the important pathogens is readily available but, as expected, their dose-response characteristics are much harder to come by. So with pathogen risk assessment we see the same types of uncertainties creeping into the framework as we have encountered for chemicals.
