While pressure melting may be important for snow and ice near 0°C, it is possible that even here an alternative explanation will prove important. Ice is a substance of unusual structural complexity, and it has been speculated that a liquidlike surface layer is present near the melting point [17,18] if this is correct, the low /t values observed at low sliding speeds near 0°C may be due to a peculiarity of the surface nature of ice rather than to pressure melting. [Pg.439]

Thickeners. Thickeners are added to remover formulas to increase the viscosity which allows the remover to cling to vertical surfaces. Natural and synthetic polymers are used as thickeners. They are generally dispersed and then caused to swell by the addition of a protic solvent or by adjusting the pH of the remover. When the polymer swells, it causes the viscosity of the mixture to increase. Viscosity is controlled by the amount of thickener added. Common thickeners used in organic removers include hydroxypropylmethylceUulose [9004-65-3], hydroxypropylceUulose [9004-64-2], hydroxyethyl cellulose, and poly(acryHc acid) [9003-01-4]. Thickeners used in aqueous removers include acryHc polymers and latex-type polymers. Some thickeners are not stable in very acidic or very basic environments, so careful selection is important. [Pg.550]

The oxidation rapidly reaches saturation, suggesting the surface nature of ozone and atomic oxygen against of PP as a consequence of limited diffusion of both oxygen species into the polymer. One of the most promising applications of enzyme-immobilized mesoporous materials is as microscopic reactors. Galameau et al. investigated the effect of mesoporous silica structures and their surface natures on the activity of immobilized lipases [199]. Too hydrophilic (pure silica) or too hydrophobic (butyl-grafted silica) supports are not appropriate for the development of high activity for lipases. An adequate hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance of the support, such as a supported-micelle, provides the best route to enhance lipase activity. The above conclusions based on SEM-AIA measurements of association in terms of particle surfaces are somewhat more tentative than the conclusions drawn from bulk association distributions. There are more analytical difficulties when characterizing the particle surfaces than when characterizing the bulk sample. In addition, the factors determining the overall surface nature of a particle are more complex than just the relative amount of the phases present on the particle surface. Time-resolved measurements of photogenerated (very intense illumination, up to 0.56 GW/cm ) electron/hole recombination on CD (selenosulphate/NTA bath) CdSe of different crystal sizes has shown that the trapping of electrons, probably in surface states, occurs in ca. 0.5 ps, and a combination of (intensity-dependent) Auger recombination and shallow-trapped recombination occurs in a time frame of ca. 50 ps. A much slower (not measured) decay due to deeply trapped charges also occurred [102]. A different time-resolved photoluminescence study on similar films attributed emission to recombination from localized states [103]. In particular, the large difference in luminescence efficiency and lifetime between samples annealed in air and in vacuum evidenced the surface nature of these states. [Pg.179]
