Hydroxyethyl celluloses

Some part of the cellulose fraction is redirected to make cellulose derivatives, such as cellulose acetate, methyl and ethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, and hydroxypropyl cellulose. These derivatives find multiple applications, for instance, as additives in current products (e.g., paints, lacquers) of chemical industry. Typically, the preparation of cellulose derivatives takes place as a two-phase reaction cellulose is pretreated, for example, with alkali, and a reagent is added to get the substitution. Usually no catalyst is needed [5]. [Pg.165]

Hydrazine gel compns contg fuel metals (such as Al, Mg, Be, etc), microdimensional fibers (such as glass, asbestos, cellulose or synthetic) and thickeners, such as polyacrylamide, Na CM-cellulose, hydroxyethyl-cellulose, poly(vinyl)aIc, poly(Me methacrylate). Thus a soft gel was prepd. It contained hydrazine 65.20, polyacrylamide 0.67, microglass fibers 0.80 Al powder 33 33%... [Pg.575]

A slightly different approach is to deliver the active drug in a dry powder carrier system, for example microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxyethyl starch, cross-linked dextran, microcrystalline chitosan, carbomer, pectin, or alginic acid. The polymer absorbs water upon contact with the nasal mucosa and swells to become a viscous gel, often demonstrating bioadhesive properties. Such systems can remain in the nasal cavity for as long as six hours. For example, the bioavailability in rats of the somatostatin analogue, octreotide, was shown to be enhanced by the co-administration of alginic acid and cross-linked dextran as dry powders. [Pg.241]

Cellulose derivatives (methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, etc.) and starch derivatives are more useful binders. [Pg.122]

Of cellulose ethers only ethyl cellulose has found application as a molding material. Methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose are usefiil water-soluble polymers. The first step in the manufacture of each of these materials is the preparation of alkali cellulose (soda cellulose) by treating cellulose with concentrated sodium hydroxide. Ethyl cellulose is made by reacting alkali cellulose... [Pg.511]

Cellulose, an almost linear polymer of hydroglucose, is the most abimdantly occurring natural polymer on earth. Films made from cellulose derivatives tend to be water soluble, resistant to fats and oils, tough, and flexible (Baldwin, Nisperos, Hagenmaier, Baker, 1997 Cutter, Sumner, 2002 Krumel, Lindsay, 1976). A number of cellulose derivatives are produced commercially, most commonly carboxy-methyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, and cellulose acetate (CA). Of these derivatives, only CA is widely used in packaging of baked goods and fresh produce. Cellulosic derivatives such as hydroxy propyl... [Pg.157]
