A modified latex composition contains a phosphorus surface group. Such a latex is formed by emulsion polymerization of unsaturated synthetic monomers in the presence of a phosponate or a phosphate which is intimately bound to the surface of the latex. Thus, a modified latex containing 46% solids was prepared by emulsion polymerization of butadiene, styrene, acrylic acid-styrene seed latex, and a phosphonate comonomer in H20 in the presence of phosphated alkylphenol ethoxylate at 90°C. The modified latex is useful as a coating for substrates and as a binder in aqueous systems containing inorganic fillers employed in paper coatings, carpet backings, and wallboards [119]. [Pg.602]

The consumption of polymer dispersions in 1997 was 10xl06 t. The market is divided among styrene-butadien dispersions (35 %), dispersions containing vinyl acetate (32 %), styrene and styrene-acrylate dispersions (25 %) and others in minor quantities. They have many applications coatings and paints, adhesives, textile finishing, paper coatings and others. When used as coatings the dispersions should be suitable for food contact. Many substances can be used as monomers ... [Pg.46]

The paint samples were prepared from a high-grade silicone resin emulsion paint [48] with a binder ratio of 10 wt% styrene acrylate to 10 wt% silicone resin emulsion (both 50% solids). The coatings were applied to a mineral substrate and dried at room temperature. Part of each sample was etched for a few minutes in 10% nitric acid so that the organic polymer could be visualized better. [Pg.830]

The range of monomers available and copolymeiization in varying compositional blends makes the number of possible polymer variants immense. Acrylic and styrene-acrylic copolymers are the most widely used polymers in paints and other coatings. According to Lesko " acrylic polymers account for 30% of commercial emulsion polymers. Other polymers commonly used in film forming latices are polychloroprene and poly(vinyl acetate). Polystyrene-cobutadiene latices are mixed with cement and sand to form rubberized cement, as well as being used as additives in textiles and paper industries, and in the manufacture of foam rubber. [Pg.1445]

The utility of polyaniline in corrosion resistant coatings has been noted [McAndrew et al., 1996]. The addition of polyaniline to acid containing polymers e.g., polyamic acid precursor of poly-imides, styrene-acrylic acid copolymers) allowed for polymeric doping and intermediate corrosion protection of the blends compared to the constituents. Epoxy addition and diisocyante terminated... [Pg.1185]

Other water-borne coatings include water-soluble emulsions, dispersions, and latex resins. Water-soluble resins are rare because most resins derived from vegetable oils are insoluble in water. The true emulsions are based on the emulsification of the oil or alkyd through either the action of a surfactant or a resin that has a surfactantlike character. The alkyd emulsions are readily prepared and can be used for OEM coatings and architectural applications. The submicron size droplets are stabilized by the thickeners (El-Aasser Sudol, 2004 Landfester, 2005 Landfester et al., 2004 Tsavalas et al., 2004 Weissenborn Motiejauskaite, 2000a,b). In dispersions, the resin is a solid and is dispersed in water. The latex resin is usually vinyl acetate, styrene, acrylates, or methacrylates radically copolymerized in a micelle to form particles 0.1 pm in diameter (Bloom et al., 2005 Brister et al., 2000 Jiratumnukul Van De Mark, 2000 Thames et al., 2005). [Pg.584]

ATRP is an excellent method for the preparation of functional polymers. Polymers with molecular weights up to M =100,()00 can be obtained with narrow molecular weight distribution. Many functionalized styrenes, acrylates and other functional monomers were successfully polyineiized using a wide range of functional initiators or macroinitiators. Furthermore chain-end halogens can be displaced. Because of all these possibilities, ATRP can find applications in solventless coatings, adhesives, lubricants, surfactants and additives. [Pg.27]

In conventional exterior-use paints SB dispersions have largely been replaced by styrene-acrylate dispersions, and their use is now restricted to special applications (corrosion protection primers, wood primers, mortar modification) where low film permeability to gases, water vapor, etc., and complete resistance of the polymer to hydrolysis are necessary. In order to achieve a uniform surface and thus improve printability, paper and card are coated with paper-coating colors. Carboxylated SB dispersions are used in these paints as binders. [Pg.36]
