High-gloss

These cellulose esters form tough, strong, stiff, hard plastics with almost unlimited color possibilities. Articles made from these plastics have a high gloss and are suitable for use in contact with food. 

Other types of dryers may be employed for special products or situations. For example, the Yankee dryer, a steam-heated cylinder, 3.7—6.1 m dia, dries the sheet from one side only. It is used extensively for tissues, particularly where creping is accompHshed as the sheet leaves the dryer, and to produce machine-gla2ed papers where intimate contact with the poHshed dryer surface produces a high gloss finish on the contact side. 

Use of a shoe poHsh imparts high gloss, maintains the supple hand of the leather (qv), and increases the weather resistance of the leather (3,57—59). Three general types of poHshes are produced solvent pastes, self-polishing Hquids, and emulsion creams. Solvent pastes represent ca 60% of the market (58). 

Candy is coated with shellac to seal in moisture and keep the product fresh. The coating provides a high gloss to the confection, which improves its appearance. No-wax tile has long been important ia the resideatial market. Such products have a high gloss surface coatiag that resists abrasioa and soiling. When properly designed and maintained, no-wax tile retains its shiny appearance for an extended period of time without appHcation of floor poHsh.

AcryHc lacquers also have disadvantages the gloss of the air-dry film is too low and the surface must be mbbed to achieve the high gloss necessary for automotive top coats and most importantly, VOC emissions are very high. AcryHc lacquers are expected to be phased out when controls become more restrictive. 

Porcelain enamels meet a variety of performance characteristics required for different appHcations. The common characteristics of all enamels include good adherence to the substrate and good thermal expansion fit to the metal. Specific properties depend on usage for example, acid and alkaH resistance, hot water resistance, abrasion resistance, thermal shock resistance, high gloss, high reflectance, specific color, heat resistance, and cleanabihty. 

By the early 1980s high-gloss DMCs using low-profile resins were finding use in kitchen appliances such as steam iron bases, toaster end-plates and casings for electric fires.
