Corrosion resistance coating

Corrosion control methods consist of protective coatings, corrosion-resistant metals and alloys, corrosion inhibitors, polymers, anodic and cathode protection, corrosion control services, corrosion research and development, and education and training. The total annual cost of corrosion estimated with this method for the average year of 1998 was 121.41 billion or 1.381% of the 8.79 trillion gross domestic product. Table 4.1 shows the distribution of corrosion control methods and services eosts. [Pg.205]

Erosion Corrosion caused by the impingement of a corrosive fluid or fluid containing abrasive particles on a component, removing or preventing the formation of a protective coating. Corrosion resistance of galvanized and passivated metals can effectively be eliminated by erosion. [Pg.94]

Protecting metallic substrates against corrosion is one of the prime functions of most coatings. Corrosion resistant coatings are typically formulated using anticorrosive pigments and suitable binders with the optimum formulation parameters. In addition, organic compounds known as corrosion inhibitors are often added at low levels, and can effectively reduce the corrosion rate of a metal or slow down the individual corrosion reactions. [Pg.275]

Electroless nickel coatings can be easily soldered and are used in electronic applications to facilitate soldering of light metals such as aluminum. Electroless nickel is often used as a barrier coating to be effective, the deposit must be free of pores and defects. In the as-deposited amorphous state, the coating corrosion resistance is excellent (Table 12), and in many environments is superior to that of pure nickel or chromium alloys. However, after heat treatment the corrosion resistance can deteriorate. [Pg.151]

The noble metals, i.e. gold, platinum, palladium, and rhodium, and the corrosion-resistant metals, i.e. chromium, nickel, tin, tin-lead solder, and titanium, require no finish other than cleaning. Soldered joints should be protected with a moisture-proofing compound or coating. Corrosion-resistant (or treated to resist corrosion) minor devices (fasteners, etc.) should be used. Fasteners should be treated with zinc chromate, zinc chromate paste, or graphite-free dry-film anti-seize compound. [Pg.371]
