Masonry coating

Motor oils, brake-oils, and transmission fluids can cause the discoloration of garage floors. Therefore, it has been common practice to coat masonry surfaces with materials capable of rendering them resistant to water, oils, and other contaminants (23). [Pg.200]

The mixture of dodecylammonium lactate and dodecylammonium salicylate possesses a wide spectrum of microbicidal efficacy which covers Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi and algae. It may be used for the preparation of microbicidal wash solutions for the antimicrobial treatment for surface coatings, masonry, brick, wood and plaster. The wash solution should contain 0.5-3% of the mixture (concentrate) a 5% solution may be necessary in cases of particularly severe surface infestation. Other applications Treatment of industrial water circuits, eradication of dry-rot of timber. [Pg.724]

Masonry coatings are applied to concrete, brick, stone and tile, and can include similar materials, such as traffic marking paints. The primary reasons for coating masonry are to prevent the deterioration of the surface, to block the passage of moisture through the masonry, and to improve its appearance. Typical masonry coatings must be resistant to alkalies and alkaline environments, since many masonry substrates contain lime and water-soluble alkaline salts. [Pg.101]

Any of these mortars can be used for unit masonry or for stucco (exterior plaster). The finish coat in conventional interior plastering is composed of either neat time putty or a sanded putty, gauged with Keene s cement or gypsum-gauging plaster. The former is called a whitecoat finish the latter a sandfloat finish. [Pg.177]

Resins, usually in a partially condensed form, are used to provide a water-repellent treatment for brickwork and masonry. Methyl-phenylsilicone resins are used as coatings for eletrical equipment and in the impregnation of class H electrical equipment. Dimethylsilicone fluids are also used as water-repellent coatings for class A or class B insulation. [Pg.832]

Traditional cold store construction was to build an insulated lining within a masonry shell. The outer skin would be erected in brick and concrete, and rendered as smooth as possible inside with cement plaster, to take the insulation. When the surface was dry, it would have several coats of bitumen applied as a vapour barrier and slabs of insulation material stuck to this with hot bitumen. This was normally carried out in two or more layers so that joints did not pass right through the insulant, but were staggered. The inner skin would be finished with cement plaster, reinforced with wire mesh. The usual insulant was slab cork. [Pg.178]

The most common dampproofing treatment for residential foundation walls is a parge coat covered with bituminous asphalt. The parge coat is used for concrete masonry walls but is not necessary for poured concrete walls. This two-stage treatment has been replaced by surface bonding cement in some areas. [Pg.1282]

Mortars are cements used for bonding together masonry units, such as stones or bricks. When a cement is used to conceal masonry, as a more or less smooth covering on walls, for example, it is referred to as plaster. A very fine plaster, known as stucco, is made of very thin sand or finely comminuted marble. Freshly prepared plasters and stuccos are spread on consolidated masonry to form more or less uniform and smooth layers stucco also provides a smooth and often flat outer coating. [Pg.169]

TechXtract has several potential limitations. The technology is limited by the depth it can remove contaminants, which is related to the porousness of the contaminated surface. The technology may be less effective on painted or sealed surfaces. Process chemicals will remove certain types of coatings, but mechanical methods may be needed in some cases. H signihcant cracks are present in concrete or masonry, pockets of contaminants can form that are not readily extracted. Cracked areas may require sealing, or the area surrounding the crack may have to be chipped out. The environment must have a temperature above 32°F. In addition, the contaminated surface must be accessible to the process chemicals. [Pg.324]

Exemplary water-repellent treatments for masonry surfaces include metal stearates, oils, waxes, acrylates (both polymers and monomers), silicones (solvent-based and emulsion), siliconates, silanes and, fluorochemicals. In contrast, to waterproofing coatings, water-repellent coatings, because they are permeable to water vapor, do not trap moisture and, therefore they can reduce spalling. In addition most water-repellent coatings do not alter the appearance of a porous masonry. [Pg.200]

MW 0/1mud Mica. Wei ground mica is used because of its unique properties, i.e.. luster, slip and sheen, and high aspect ratio. It is used in wallpaper and coated paper, nacreous pigments, as a coating for rubber, in ouidoor house paint, and in aluminum paints. Mica is used in all types of scalers for porous surfaces, such as vvallboard masonry, and concrete blocks, to reduce penetration and improve holdout and as a filler in plasties to improve its electrical and thermal resistance and its insulating qualities. See also Sealants. [Pg.994]

A substance that, because of its physicochemical nature, will not mix or blend with another substance.. All hydrophobic materials have water-repellent properties due largely to differences in surface tension or electric charges, e.g., oils, fats, waxes, and certain types of plastics. Silicone resin coatings can keep water from penetrating masonry by lining the pores, not by filling them they will not exclude water under pressure. [Pg.1436]

Concrete masonry unit (CMU) construction is widely used (Figure 6). It can prevent buildup of contaminants when finished with an epoxy or other smooth, chemical-resistant coating. Where retrofit is not a regular practice, the strength of concrete block and its long life recommend it. [Pg.214]
