Strawberries pests

Pestox III has been effectively used by Pest Control Ltd. to arrest transmission of the strawberry viruses by virtue of the 100 per cent kill of the strawberry aphis. [Pg.191]

Keeping to a strict rotation for vegetable crops (see also p.230) not only allows better use of nutrients, but also prevents the buildup of pests and pathogens in the soil. With perennial crops, such as roses, strawberries, apples, and pears, do not replant with the same species in the same place. New plants may fail to thrive due to high levels of host-specific pests or pathogens in the soil. The old established plants may have built up tolerance to these. [Pg.93]

Rhainds, M., Kovach, J. and English-Loeb, G. 2002. Impact of strawberry cultivar and incidence of pests on yield and profitability of strawberries under conventional and organic management systems. Biological Agriculture and Horticulture 19 333-353. [Pg.119]

Uses herbicides/insecticides pre- or post-emergence control of broadleaf weeds in cereals, maize, lucerne, clover, trefoil, grass leys, potatoes, peas, onions, garlics, peas, leeks, soya beans, orchards, groundnuts, strawberries, vineyards and other crops for control of strawberry runners and raspberry suckers and overwintering forms of insect pests on fruit trees also used as a desiccant for leguminous seed crops destruction of potato haulms as a pre-harvest hop defoliant, etc. [Pg.356]

Emamectin benzoate is a semisynthetic avermectin that is derived from fermentation of avermectin B. It contains a mixture of 4" epimethylamino-4"-deoxy-avermectin B,a and Bjb benzoate salts. Emamectin benzoate is a stomach poison insecticide active against lepi-dopterous pests in vegetables, cotton, maize, peanuts, soybeans, and strawberries. Its oral LD50 in rats is 1516 mg/kg. [Pg.66]

Unlike vegetable crops, which share many of the same pests, fruit crops are affected by a wide variety of insects and diseases. Because fruit crops are borne on so many types of plants—including fruit trees, berry bushes, vines, and herbaceous plants such as strawberries—they have a wide range of cultural requirements as well. However, regardless of the crop you are growing, there are basic steps you can take to help prevent and control insects and diseases. [Pg.100]

Crowns blacken and die leaves notched. Cause Strawberry root weevils. The grubs of A", black snout beetles feed on alumroots crowns starting in early spring. Adults feed at night on foliage. Remove and destroy infested plants clean up debris where pests overwinter. Drench soil around roots with parasitic nematodes spray pyrethrin on leaves at night to kill adults. [Pg.118]

Leaves rolled up. Cause Strawberry leaf rollers. These green or brown, k" caterpillars mine leaves in the early spring and later form webs and roll leaves as they feed. Leaves may brown and die fruit is deformed. For light infestations, destroy the rolled leaves along with the caterpillars inside. For a very heavy infestation, apply BTK. See the opposite page for an illustration of this pest. [Pg.219]

Wilted plants with healthy roots may be infested with strawberry crown moth larvae or strawberry crown borer larvae. Crown borers are " snout beetles and crown moths are large, clear-winged moths. Both pests lay eggs on strawberries. The resulting grublike larvae burrow into plant crowns and cause wilting and death. Cut crowns of wilted plants in half. If you find a large tunnel, your plants are infected with one of these pests. The only care is to dig up and destroy these plants... [Pg.219]

Protection Offered Sulfur can be purchased alone or mixed with other insecticides and inorganic fungicides to control a wide variety of garden pests. Use sulfur as an insecticide to control insects and mites on fruit trees and citrus. You can also use sulfur as a protectant fungicide. It is effective against apple scab, brown rot of stone fruits, powdery mildews, rose black spot, rusts, and other plant diseases on many crops, including grapes, potatoes strawberries, and tomatoes. [Pg.485]

Fill a hanging basket with strawberry plants, hang it somewhere sheltered and sunny, and enjoy pretty white flowers in early summer followed by lots of juicy red fruits. A hanging basket is an ideal way of growing strawberries, as it keeps the fruit off the ground and so is much less likely to suffer from pests (such as slugs) and diseases. [Pg.72]

Dermal exposure to captan and benomyl by strawberry harvesters has been the subject of several previous studies (1.2.3). This field study was designed to test a number of hypotheses and the reproducibility of dermal exposure rate measurements taken under field conditions. Most of our past studies have not been designed for a particular pesticide but were modified to accommodate the pesticide chosen by the grower to control a certain pest. In this case, the pesticide was carbaryl (1-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate) an insecticide used to control the spittlebug and leafroller. Our results could then he compared with those obtained by Maitlen and co-workers (A) who studied workers exposed to carbaryl in an apple orchard. Furthermore, attempts will be made to test possible positive correlations between age and dermal dose rate versus productivity and dermal dose rate versus age of harvesters. Difference of dermal exposure due to age or... [Pg.123]
