Other assays have been used to evaluate the antioxidant activity against H202 of several plant-based products, namely, fruit juices from different cultivars of berries (Wang and Jiao 2000), fractions rich in phenolics isolated from the aqueous by-products obtained during the milling of oil palm fruits (Balasundram and others 2005), cherry laurel fruit and its concentrated juice (Liyana-Pathirana and others 2006), and strawberries and blackberries treated with methyl jasmonate, allyl isothiocyanate, essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia, and ethanol (Chanjirakul and others 2007). [Pg.281]

Few tastes match that of the first strawberry of the year. The earliest cultivars start cropping in late spring the season then extends through summer, with late-season "perpetual" types continuing into fall. In a small garden, however, it is best to grow only one or two varieties, as fewer than 12 plants of each provides a frustratingly small harvest. Plants crop well for about three years. [Pg.308]

The antioxidant activity of anthocyanins in the fruits and leaves from different cultivars of the thornless blackberry (Rubus sp.), red raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.), black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis L.) and strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa D.) was reported [54]. Studies on the ability of endothelial cells (EC) to incorporate anthocyanins and on the potential benefits against various oxidative stressors showed that the enrichment of EC with elderberry anthocyanins gave significant protective effects in the endothelial cells against the oxidative stressors, hydrogen peroxide, 2,2/-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride, and iron(II) sulfate/ascorbic acid [55]. [Pg.55]

The most important criteria in choosing a cultivar are high internal fruit quality, high resistance to harmful organisms and highly reliable yields. Since cultivars for small fruits, especially strawberries, are continuously changing, the information below must be treated with due caution. Moreover, cultivars do not exhibit the same performance at all sites, so there may well be variations from the information given. [Pg.72]

Wilted plants with no root damage may have Verticillium wilt. Verticillium-infected plants look stunted and may collapse during their first summer in the ground inner leaves may remain green until the plant dies. There is no cure for Verticillium wilt. You must plant a new bed where you haven t grown strawberries or other Verticillium-susceptible plants, such as tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, or eggplants, for the past few years. Verticillium-resistant cultivars include Blakemore , Catskill , Guardian , Robinson , Sunrise , and Surecrop . [Pg.219]

Prevention and Control Remove and destroy infected and surrounding plants. If red stele has been a problem in the past, prepare a new site for your strawberry bed and plant resistant cultivars. [Pg.401]
