Various studies have been conducted on lignin in order to overcome biomass environmental problems and produce new products with beneficial properties. One of these studies is graft copol mierization [Pg.114]

The use of locally mined, high-arsenic ( 100 ppm) coals has caused arsenic poisoning in several villages in Guizhou Province, China (Fig. 17.2 Zhou et al, 1993). Although coal has been produced and used in this area for 100 years, only with the increase in population and subsequent deforestation have some villages and [Pg.402]

Splits of coal samples collected near affected villages analyzed for trace elements revealed high concentrations of As and other deleterious elements (Belkin et al., 1997). Subsequent field work and analysis not only confirms the high concentration of arsenic and other trace elements, but also provides evidence that bears on the paragenesis of these enrichments (Belkin et al., 1998). [Pg.403]

Molecular descriptors must then be computed. Any numerical value that describes the molecule could be used. Many descriptors are obtained from molecular mechanics or semiempirical calculations. This reaction, conducted in alkaline solution, also produces carboxyl groups by hydrolysis of the amide (54). Recent work on the reaction of polyacrylamide with hydroxylamine indicates that maximum conversion to the hydroxamate fiinctionahty (—CONHOH) takes place at a pH > 12 (57). In previous studies, the main tool for process improvement was the tubular reactor. This small version of an industrial reactor tube had to be operated at less severe conditions than the industrial-size reactor.
