Stock requisition

A common solution, which satisfies both the inventory control and quality control, is to institute a stock requisition system. Authorization of requisitions may be given by a person s supervisor or can be provided via a work order. If someone has been authorized to carry out a particular job, this should authorize the person to requisition the items needed. Again for inventory control reasons, you may wish to impose a limit on such authority requiring the person to seek higher authority for items above a certain value. [Pg.478]

To ensure materials are available several systems can be used, assuming that all materials are planned and requirements are known in advance by stock number or requisition number. Some method of identifying these needs to a work order is required. The best method is through a computer, but manual systems can be used even though they require extra paperwork and manpower effort. The results of this situation can be readily foreseen. A requisition for a specific item is occasionally filled with an item which, at first glance, appears to be the one requested but, actually, was formulated for a different purpose and is either inadequate or dangerous to use for the intended purpose. A specific example of the hazards inherent in this situation may be found in the case of insecticide space spray composed of 1% DDT, 0.1% pyrethrins, or 2.5% thiocyanate in deodorized kerosene and 5% residual-effect DDT, both of which are issued in 5-gallon steel drums. Obviously, if a requisition for residual-effect DDT were to be filled with space spray, the application of the solution as a residual-effect compound w ould be of little or no value. Under some conditions, when stocks have been exposed to such adverse weather conditions that all gross identifying marks have been removed from the containers, the assumption has been made by the untrained native laborers that all unidentifiable cans of the same size contained the same material. Were it possible to have just one insecticide for all military purposes, such a situation could easily be avoided. [Pg.216]

The biggest problem, however, was financing British purchases in the United States on the cash and carry basis that prevailed in 1939-41 Britain s gold and dollar reserves fell from 519 million in September 1939 to 108 million by the end of 1940 and American securities owned by British residents were requisitioned and sold as fast, and perhaps faster, than the New York stock market could absorb them. Initially the intention had been to spin out the reserves over a three-year war and purchases of American munitions were limited as tightly as possible, so as to allow scarce dollars to be spent on machine tools and... [Pg.196]

The British had proceeded less expeditiously. The Chiefs of Staff advised in October 1945 that the best defence against atomic bombs was likely to be the deterrent effect that the possession of the means of retaliation would have on a potential aggressor, and in January 1946 they said that a stock in the order of hundreds rather than scores would be necessary to deter a country with widely dispersed industries and population (like the Soviet Union). In December 1945, ministers in the Gen 75 committee approved the construction of the first reactor capable of producing plutonium, and in August 1946 the CAS sent the first requisition for an atomic bomb to the Ministry of Supply. The McMahon Act was amended in October 1950 to allow rather more cooperation between American and British scientists but the first British test did not take place until 3 October 1952, in the hold of a ship off Australia. The first test of a British atomic bomb dropped by an aircraft did not occur until 11 October 1956. [Pg.236]

Apart from the above three types there are custom built rubber products such as expansion joints, flexible cell covers and large size rubber foils for the caustic soda industry, and many inflatables, fabric reinforced products and thick moulded sheets for specialty applications in certain process plants. These are all hand formed in aluminium or cast iron moulds or forms by laying up process and then cured in autoclave. Here the flow of the un-vulcanized rubber during cure is not very important as the shape is already formed rather the green strength and the stiffness of rubber stock with a low scorch time are the important requisites. The compositional goal is to make base stocks whose structures are dominated by isoparaffins and monocycloparaffins with long hydrocarbon chains attached. These molecules do not exist in natural distillates in sufficient concentration to obtain them by solvent extraction (and no solvent with the requisite selectivity appears to have been developed), therefore catalytic methods must be used. Group III+ base stocks will be largely isoparaffins in composition and therefore will use wax, preferably of Fischer-Tropsch origin, as feed to an isomerization process unit. It takes time to process an order. In the Far Eastern theatre, the first use of gas warfare was never seriously considered by the dominant Allied power - the United States. Until 1945 American gas policy has been aptly described as one of minimum deterrence, aimed at inhibiting initiation by the Axis nations. This limited objective reflected Roosevelt s fierce opposition to gas warfare and his declaration that America would never employ it initially. It also derived from a reluctance by the military to divert scarce resources to improve their gas readiness in the Far East. By January 1945, the United States possessed sufficient munitions to launch a gas attack but the bulk of them remained in the United States. Neither of the Pacific Theatre Commanders had allocated the requisite shipping space to transport the gas munitions overseas. Prolonged shutdowns of production facilities or other vital installations must be avoided as much as possible.
