These compounds are commercially important as accelerators in the vulcanization of rubber (Scheme 83). [Pg.260]

One of the products of the reaction of sulfur with chlorine is disulfur dichloride, S2C12, a yellow liquid with a nauseating smell it is used for the vulcanization of rubber. When disulfur dichloride reacts with more chlorine in the presence of iron(III) chloride as a catalyst, the foul-smelling red liquid sulfur dichloride, SC12, is produced. Sulfur dichloride reacts with ethene to give mustard gas (16), which has been used in chemical warfare. Mustard gas causes blisters, discharges from the nose, and vomiting it also destroys the cornea of the eye. All in all, it is easy to see why ancient civilizations associated sulfur with the underworld. [Pg.759]

The elasticity of a polymer is its ability to return to its original shape after being stretched. Natural rubber has low elasticity and is easily softened by hearing. Flowever, the vulcanization of rubber increases its elasticity. In vulcanization, rubber is heated with sulfur. The sulfur atoms form cross-links between the poly-isoprene chains and produce a three-dimensional network of atoms (Fig. 19.17). Because the chains are covalently linked together, vulcanized rubber does not soften as much as natural rubber when the temperature is raised. Ic. Cross-Linking of Polymer Chains.—Formation of chemical bonds between linear polymer molecules, commonly referred to as cross-linking, also may lead to the formation of infinite networks. Vulcanization of rubber is the most prominent example of a process of this sort. Through the action of sulfur, accelerators, and other ingredients present in the vulcanization recipe, sulfide cross-linkages are created by a mechanism not fully understood (see Chap. XI). Vulcanized rubbers, being typical network structures, are insoluble in all solvents which do not disrupt the chemical structure, and they do not undergo appreciable plastic, or viscous, flow. [Pg.356]

The silver white, shiny, metal-like semiconductor is considered a semimetal. The atomic weight is greater than that of the following neighbor (iodine), because tellurium isotopes are neutron-rich (compare Ar/K). Its main use is in alloys, as the addition of small amounts considerably improves properties such as hardness and corrosion resistance. New applications of tellurium include optoelectronics (lasers), electrical resistors, thermoelectric elements (a current gives rise to a temperature gradient), photocopier drums, infrared cameras, and solar cells. The most important binary compounds of sulfur and chlorine are S2C12 and SC12. Both of these compounds are used in large quantities in many ways, but one of the important uses for S2C12 is in the vulcanization of rubber. This compound is prepared by chlorinating sulfur. [Pg.533]

The vulcanization of rubber is often called one of the great accidental discoveries. But really, it was because Charles persisted in his work despite setbacks, and because his mind was prepared to see the importance of the discovery.There are now over 21 million metric tons of natural and synthetic (manufactured) rubber produced each year. Barium hydroxide (hydrate) [Ba(OH)2] exists in several forms and has many uses in oil and grease additives, water treatment, vulcanization of rubber, and the manufacture of soaps, beet sugar, glass, and steel. [Pg.80]

Almost all of the sulfur needed for healthy bodies is found in amino acids as cysteine and methionine. Sulfur serves several important roles including as a cross-linking agent similar to that served by sulfur in the cross-linking, or vulcanization, of rubber. This cross-linking allows the various chains, which are connected by these cross-links, to remember where they are relative to one another. Antimony pentasulfide is used in vulcanization of rubber to produce red rubber in fireworks and as a pigment. [Pg.53]

Calcium hydroxide has wide industrial applications. It is used to make cement, mortar, plaster, and other building materials. It also is used in water soluble paints, and for fireproofing coatings and lubricants. Other applications are in the manufacture of paper pulp as a preservative for egg in vulcanization of rubber as a depilatory for hides and in preparation of many calcium salts. [Pg.167]
