Special Situations

Some of these situations are mentioned elsewhere in this book in an expanded format. Therefore, we mention only some of the key issues associated with a CAVC unit, including  [Pg.206]

Psychological distress in long-term settings is highly prevalent, more so in settings that provide for LTMV. These psychological issues are addressed more comprehensively in Chapter 12 of this book. It is, however, important to provide recreational outlets and home visits for those able to participate. [Pg.206]

The locked-in patients, usually with ALS, are a great challenge for the health care professionals. Advanced directives are particularly important. Many patients and their families have unrealistic expectations and are very reluctant to accept disease progression to the stage where communication with the patient is impossible. The team is frustrated by not knowing what the patients needs are or whether the patient wishes to continue with LTMV. [Pg.206]

In our experience, most patients are not appropriately informed about their degenerative disease at the time of their diagnoses, and as a consequence have not been able to make informed decisions regarding their own care. [Pg.207]

Nutritional assessment upon admission is necessary. Enteral nutrition is preferred in those patients unable to maintain an adequate caloric intake by the oral route. Overfeeding needs to be avoided, and monitoring of the glycemic levels needs to be strict. As many patients experience diarrhea, especially on implementation of enteral feedings, this needs to be [Pg.207]

Absorber oil units offer the advantage that Hquids can be removed at the expense of only a small (34—69 kPa (4.9—10.0 psi)) pressure loss in the absorption column. If the feed gas is available at pipeline pressure, then Httle if any recompression is required to introduce the processed natural gas into the transmission system. However, the absorption and subsequent absorber-oil regeneration process tends to be complex, favoring the simpler, more efficient expander plants. Separations using soHd desiccants are energy-intensive because of the bed regeneration requirements. This process option is generally considered only in special situations such as hydrocarbon dew point control in remote locations. [Pg.172]

The improvement in wear resistance from ion implantation is shown in Figure 10 (20). However, the thin case cannot sustain very heavy loads. Hence this application for improved wear resistance is limited to special situations, eg, low loads. [Pg.216]

Of the raw material hydrogen sources—natural gas, coal, and petroleum fractions—natural gas is the most often employed in ammonia plants in the 1990s and steam reforming is by far the most often used process. Partial oxidation processes are utilized where steam-reformable feeds are not available or in special situations where local conditions exist to provide favorable economics. Table 5 fists the contribution of the various feedstocks to world ammonia... [Pg.341]

Magnetic flow meters are sometimes utilized in corrosive Hquid streams or slurries where a low unrecoverable pressure drop and high rangeabiHty is required. The fluid is required to be electrically conductive. Magnetic flow meters, which use Faraday s law to measure the velocity of the electrically conductive Hquid, are relatively expensive. Their use is therefore reserved for special situations where less expensive meters are not appropriate. Installation recommendations usually specify an upstream straight mn of five pipe diameters, keeping the electrodes in continuous contact with the Hquid. [Pg.65]

Various accessories can be suppHed along with the control valves for special situations. Positioners ensure that the valve stem is accurately positioned following small or slowly changing control signals or where unbalanced valve forces exist. Boosters, which are actually pneumatic amplifiers, can increase the speed of response or provide adequate force in high pressure appHcations. Limit switches are sometimes included to provide remote verification that the valve stem has actually moved to a particular position. [Pg.67]

The electrical characteristics of ceramic materials vary gteady, since the atomic processes ate different for the various conduction modes. The transport of current may be because of the motion of electrons, electron holes, or ions. Electrical ceramics ate commonly used in special situations where reftactoriness or chemical resistance ate needed, or where other environmental effects ate severe (see Refractories). Thus it is also important to understand the effects of temperature, chemical additives, gas-phase equilibration, and interfacial reactions. [Pg.350]

Irreversible Processes. Irreversible processes are among the most expensive continuous processes. These are used only in special situations, such as when the separation factors of more efficient processes (that is, processes that are theoretically more efficient from an energy point of view) are found to be uneconomicaHy small. Except for pressure diffusion, the diffusion methods discussed herein are essentially irreversible processes. Thus,... [Pg.75]

In general, the step count method of estimation can be apphed to any special situation to derive a model equation for that particular industry or group of processes. [Pg.865]

Heterocyclic cations in which the bonding number is increased by a process other than the addition of a proton (or equivalent) present a special situation. Structures of this type usually result from the participation of an originally nonbonding electron pair or a heteroatom in the formation of a ring or a multiple bond. [Pg.41]

In the past, qualitative approaches for hazard evaluation and risk analysis have been able to satisfy the majority of decision makers needs. In the future, there will be an increasing motivation to use QRA. For the special situations that appear to demand quantitative support for safety-related decisions, QRA can be effective in increasing the manager s understanding of the level of risk associated with a company activity. Whenever possible, decision makers should design QRA studies to produce relative results that support their information requirements. QRA studies used in this way are not subject to nearly as many of the numbers problems and limitations to which absolute risk studies are subject, and the results are less likely to be misused. [Pg.63]

The detection of impurities or surface layers (e.g., oxides) on thick specimens is a special situation. Although the X-ray production and absorption assumptions used for thin specimens apply, the X-ray spectra are complicated by the background and characteristic X rays generated in the thick specimen. Consequently, the absolute detection limits are not as good as those given above for thin specimens. However, the detection limits compare very favorably with other surface analysis techniques, and the results can be quantified easily. To date there has not been any systematic study of the detection limits for elements on surfaces however, representative studies have shown that detectable surface concentrations for carbon and... [Pg.361]

Common-sense guidelines can be deduced from the requirements for building operations and works of engineering construction summarized in Table 13.11. In special situations, e.g. for firefighting or protection against toxic chemicals, hoods and suits cover the head and neck and many incorporate protection. [Pg.436]

Fluorinated polymers stand out sharply against other construction materials for their excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature stability. In this respect they are not only superior to other plastics but also to platinum, gold, glass, enamel and special alloys. The fluorinated plastics used in process plants are polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE), fluorinated ethylene/ propylene (FEP), polytrifiuoromonochlorethylene (PTFCE) and polyvinyl fluoride (PVF). They are much more expensive than other polymers and so are only economical in special situations [59]. [Pg.116]

In some cases where the ASME Code woidd not require pressure relief protection, the 1.5 Times Design Pressure Rule is apphcable. This rule is stated as follows Equipment may be considered to be adequately protected against overpressure from certain low-probability situations if the pressure does not exceed 1.5 times design pressure. This criterion has been selected since it generally does not exceed yield stress, and most Ukety would not occur more frequently than a hydrostatic test. Thus, it will protect against the possibility of a catastrophic failure. This rule is applied in special situations which have a low probability of occurrence but which cannot be completely ruled out. [Pg.122]

Except for special sihiations, pressure relief devices are not provided for fire exposure of heat exchangers, air fins, or piping, nor are the exposed surfaces of such items included for calculating the fire exposure heat input. Special situations may be congestion and substandard spacing, or unusually large equipment with normal liquid holdup over about 4 m and/or which represents over 15% of the total wetted surface of the system to which it is directly connected for pressure relief. [Pg.123]

In these special situations, other methods, such as electronic microscopy, IR spectrum, and fluorescence spectrum are to be used. [Pg.138]

Some of the larger sizes, 22 in. and up, are used for special situations. Also, some of the non-standard process sizes such as 2X in., 3X in. and 5 in. are used by packaged equipment suppliers to connect components in their system for use in processes such as refrigeration, drying, or contacting. [Pg.59]

For these special situations properly designed rupture disks using corrosion-resistant materials can be installed both before the valve inlet as well as on the valve discharge. For these cases, refer to both the valve manufacturer and the rupture disk manufacturers. See later discussion of code requirements for this condition. [Pg.413]

Calculate the overall coefficient using Equation 10-37. Neglect the tube-wall resistance, unless special situations indicate that it should be included. [Pg.111]

Other tool joint sizes to accommodate special situations can be fuinidied on request. [Pg.753]

Engineering standards Engineering standards can be utilized to estimate jobs when data is available and applies to the work to be performed. Standards provide an average time to complete a job, but special situations or adverse conditions are not considered. [Pg.829]

The problem of Sec. 12 can be stated in this special situation as follows Let It be an arbitrary permutation group of degree 5 and /cj, /cj,. .., denote n non-negative integers whose sum is s. How many nonequivalent ways modulo H are there to place /Cj balls of the first, balls of the second,. .., k balls of the n-th color in 5 slots According to Sec. 16 the solution is established by introducing m cycle index of H and expanding the... [Pg.22]

A special situation is created in a polymerization of isolated dienes or similar compounds like diisocyanates. Addition of such a monomer to a growing polymeric chain leaves its second reactive unit in the vicinity of the active center. Consequently, the addition of this unit is favored to the addition of any other unit, and in fact it is governed by a unimolecular and not bimolecular kinetic law. Its addition leads to the formation of a ring, and if ring closure is... [Pg.163]
