Although most nickel sensitization results from nonoccupational exposures, nickel dermatitis was historically a problem in workplaces where there was a high risk of continuous contact with soluble nickel, eg, in electroplating (qv) shops. Improved personal and industrial hygiene has largely eliminated this problem. However, there are a few occupations involving wet nickel work, particularly where detergents faciUtate the penetration of skin by nickel, where hand eczema may occur (126). 

Magnetic flow meters are sometimes utilized in corrosive Hquid streams or slurries where a low unrecoverable pressure drop and high rangeabiHty is required. The fluid is required to be electrically conductive. Magnetic flow meters, which use Faraday s law to measure the velocity of the electrically conductive Hquid, are relatively expensive. Their use is therefore reserved for special situations where less expensive meters are not appropriate. Installation recommendations usually specify an upstream straight mn of five pipe diameters, keeping the electrodes in continuous contact with the Hquid. 

Certain grades and formulations of the fluorocarbon elastomers are qualified under the code of Eederal Regulations, 21, Eood and Dmgs, Part 177.2600 for use as mbber articles whose intended appHcations requite repeated or continuous contact with food. To reduce friction and improve compression efficiency, the piston will be provided with segmented compression rings as shown in Figure 11-11. To prevent piston-to-bore contact, the piston may also be provided with removable wear bands that are in continuous contact with the cylinder wall. The compression rings and wear bands are replaced at regular intervals and typically made from soft materials such as brass, Micarta, Teflon, and the newer thermoplastics. 

For some applications, notably feed-water treatment for high-pressure boilers, removal of oxygen is essential. Note, however, that for a given point on the surface, abrasion is not a continuous process, but rather occurs as discrete events. Between the time of the abrasion event and boundary layers, however, the surface is left highly exposed and reacts quickly with the slurry chemicals. From the milling of copra for the extraction of crude coconut oil through the refining steps and final storage in tanks, the oil is in continuous contact with iron and possibly copper-containing alloys, both of which are prooxidants. The addition of citric acid (25) or any other appropriate antioxidant in the last stages of deodor-ization of RED oils (see discussion) affords protection to the oil from oxidative rancidity. Crude coconut oil has natural and protective antioxidants. 

Isofluorphate, U5P. Isofluorphate. diisopropylphos-phoronuoridate (Floropryl). is a colorless liquid soluble in water to the extent of 1.54% at 2S°C. which decomposes to give a pH of 2.S. It is soluble in alcohol and to some extent In peanut oil. It is. stable in peanut oil for a period of I year but decomposes in water in a few days. Solutions in peanut oil can be sterilized by autoclaving. The compound should be stored in hard gla.ss containers. Continued contact with volt glass is said to hasten decomposition, as evidenced by iliscoluraiion.
