Principle. An organic compound which contains chlorine is mixed with sodium peroxide and ignited in a closed metal bomb. The chlorine is thus converted to sodium chloride, and after acidification the chloride is estimated by the Volhard volumetric method. Bromine and iodine, when constituents of organic compounds similarly treated, are converted largely into sodium bromate and iodate respectively these ions are therefore subsequently reduced by hydrazine to bromide and iodide ions, and estimated as before. [Pg.505]

The first step in designing a new compound is to find compounds that have even a slight amount of usefulness for the intended purpose. These are called lead compounds. Once such compounds are identified, the problem becomes one of refinement. Computational techniques are a fairly minor part of finding lead compounds. Processings and Properties. Polybutadiene is compounded similarly to SBR and vulcanised with sulfur. The high cis-1,4 type crystallizes poorly on stretching so it is not suitable as a "gum" stock but requires carbon black reinforcement. It is generally used for automotive tires in mixtures with SBR and natural mbber. Its low T (—OS " C) makes it an excellent choice for low temperature tire traction, and also leads to a high resilience (better than natural mbber) which ia turn results ia a lower heat build-up. Of these dimethyl phthalate (DMP) is used in most compositions.
