Special Methods of Synthesis

It appears that, apart from such specialized methods of synthesis that have been developed as part of an overall effort to prepare analogues of artemisinin (9), the most popular and effective general methods for preparing the ring systems described involve the cyclization of a ring component that contains [6 + 0] ring atoms or the insertion of a one atom unit in a [5 + 1] annulation process. These general methods have found wide use, notably in the preparation of triazine-based compounds.

And we are still learning how best to fabricate and use them. As emphasised in the last chapter, the mechanical properties of polymers differ in certain fundamental ways from those of metals and ceramics, and the methods used to design with them (Chapter 27) differ accordingly. Their special properties also need special methods of fabrication. This chapter outlines how polymers are fabricated and joined. Functionalization of organic substituents adjacent to the sulfoxide moiety constitutes an important method of synthesis of a variety of sulfoxides which are required for special synthetic purposes or serve as a source of many sulfur-free organic compounds. The revived interest in this area led to new efforts for improved methods of synthesis for pure alkylidene trialkyls (ylides), for the detection and possible characterization of a pentaalkylphosphorane species, and for a better understanding of the state of structure and bonding in ylides and pentaalkyls. This recent work is summarized here with the main focus directed to some of the very simple compounds and their silicon derivatives, which have turned out to be of special significance. 

The aim of the present book is to offer a comprehensive, up-to-date survey of the numerous facets of the subject. As it falls in the Applied Physics series, the book focuses especially on basic chemical and physical concepts. There are several compounds which require different methods of synthesis or which show special reactions.

In order to comply with the strict requirements of GMP, special methods for synthesis and in process quality control have been developed, assuring high quality of radiopharmaceuticals, without actually testing sterility and apyrogenicity before dispensing the labeled product.
