Small-scale chambers

Evaluation of VOC and SVOC emission potential of individual products and materials under indoor-related conditions and over defined timescales requires the use of climate-controlled emission testing systems, so-called emission test chambers and cells, the size of which can vary between a few cm3 and several m3, depending on the application. In Figure 5.1 the dots ( ) represent volumes of test devices reported in the literature. From this size distribution they can be classified as large scale chambers, small scale chambers, micro scale chambers and cells. The selection of the systems, the sampling preparation and the test performance all depend on the task to be performed. According to ISO, chambers and cells are defined as follows ... [Pg.101]

In Fig. 2.1-1, the general arrangement of an environmental test chamber is shown. Basically, two types of environmental test chambers can be distinguished small scale chambers with volumes ranging from a few litres to a few cubic metres, and room-size large scale chambers of the walk-in type. Both types of chambers have advantages as well as disadvantages (see Table 2.1-1) (EC, 1989). [Pg.131]

The examination of particle board for formaldehyde emissions (EN 717-1, 1996) is a typical application of large scale chambers (Colombo et al., 1994). On account of the circumstances mentioned in Table 2.1-1, however, the use of small-scale chambers has spread extensively for examinations of VOC emissions of building products. [Pg.131]

Experiments in small-scale chambers (Gunnarsen et al., 1994 Kephalopoulos et al., 1996 Meininghaus et al., 1998) and the development of mathematical models (Axley, 1991 Dunn and Tichenor, 1988) give credibility to the hypothesis that secondary emis-... [Pg.255]

Fluid Dynamics in the Drying Chamber In the past, the role played by water vapor fluid dynamics was assumed to be negligible, also because of the difficulty to identify and isolate its effects from the experimental results. Nowadays computational fluid dynamics (CFD) offers the possibility to investigate complex industrial processes for example, Rasetto et al (2008) and Rasetto (2009) studied the effect of some geometrical parameters of a drying chamber (clearances between the shelves and position ofthe duct leading the vapor to the condenser) on the fluid dynamics of the water vapor as a function ofthe sublimation rate, both in a small scale (chamber volume of about 0.2 m ) and in an industrial scale... [Pg.139]

Commercially, the burner chamber and the absorber cooler sections are combined as a single unit for small-scale production. However, in large capacity plants, these units are separated. A typical commercial unit is schematically described in Figure 5 (32). [Pg.445]

H2O) made by the older chamber process and was suitable for use ia tropical climates. Ia less developed or remote areas, bleaching powder may stiU be prepared oa a small scale by generating CI2 from Ma02, NaCl, and H2SO4, and treating it with hydrated lime placed on shelves ia an absorption chamber (245). [Pg.474]

Lead chamber pmce.ss for H2SO4 intrrxluced by John Roebuck (Birmingham, UK) this immediately superseded the cumbersome small-scale glass bell-jar process (p. 708). [Pg.646]

To study the effects of molecular diffusion and formation/destabilization of reaction fronts it is advised to rely on small flow-through chambers such as capillaries or cells of sheet-type cross-section [68]. These micro reactors simply provide the small-scale environment needed for such laboratory investigations. [Pg.556]

Pulsation in a spray is generated by hydrodynamic instabilities and waves on liquid surfaces, even for continuous supply of liquid and air to the atomizer. Dense clusters of droplets are projected into spray chamber at frequencies very similar to those of the liquid surface waves. The clusters interact with small-scale turbulent structures of the air in the core of the spray, and with large-scale structures of the air in the shear and entrainment layers of outer regions of the spray. The phenomenon of cluster formation accounts for the observation of many flame surfaces rather than a single flame in spray combustion. Each flame surrounds a cluster of droplets, and ignition and combustion appear to occur in configurations of flames surrounding droplet clusters rather than individual droplets. [Pg.143]

In this study, measurements of the combustion temperature, radiation intensity, combustion products particle size distribution, and combustion efficiency have been made for combustion of aluminum particles with steam in a small-scale atmospheric dump combustor. This data will be useful for designers of combustion chambers for burning of aluminum powder with steam. [Pg.139]

A freeze-dryer must be purchased that either has a large built-in chamber, or to which a chamber can be attached. Some smaller ones are mainly for small-scale work when multiple samples are held in glass flasks or ampoules, which are attached to a manifold equipped with isolation valves. [Pg.20]

SCFs are widely used in small-scale laboratory extraction and analysis and are already established for large-scale extraction of caffeine from coffee, flavors from hops, and many other such uses with plant sizes up to 50,000 tons per year throughput. A Philip Morris semicontinuous denicotinization plant is said to employ pressure chambers of 1.5-m diameter and 5-m height. The outlet gas is passed through activated carbon and recycled. ... [Pg.35]

This apparatus seldom or never works well when applied on the small Beale, as, for instance, when applied to one or two small chambers. This,is a practical difficulty which, perhaps, in the hands of a careful and determined person, might be got over. It has been applied on a small scale at several works, and has been given up. On the other hand, several vitriol manufacturers on a large scale who use it, speak very satisfactorily of ite performance. In some cases, by its employment, the consumption of nitrate of soda has been reduced from one-tenth the weight of the sulphur employed to one-twentieth—-in foot, to the extent of one-half of that previously used. This is certainly a very good result. [Pg.1033]

Despite the understanding that smoke obscuration ought to be measured in a large scale, or by a method which can predict large-scale smoke release, the most common small-scale test method for measuring smoke from burning products is the traditional smoke chamber in the vertical mode (ASTM E 662)39 (Figure 21.14). The test results are expressed in terms of a quantity called specific optical density, which is defined in the test standard. This test has now been shown to have some serious deficiencies. The most important problem is misrepresentation of the smoke... [Pg.648]
