Environmental test chamber

A Tenney environmental test chamber (Model TSU-100) was used as an air bath. Temperature can be controlled to 0.1 °C. by adapting an Aminco bimetallic thermoregulator connected to a supersensitive relay. Samples were prepared in the form of rectangular strips. First, moduli were measured as a function of temperature. At least five minutes was given to each temperature increment ( 5°C.) to obtain thermal equilibrium.

Abstract Adsorption and desorption of indoor air pollutants to and from indoor surfaces are important phenomena. Often called sink effects, these processes can have a major impact on the concentration of pollutants in indoor environments and on the exposure of human occupants to indoor air pollutants, Basic theories are used to describe the processes using fundamental equations. These equations lead to models describing sink effects in indoor environments. Experimental studies have been performed to determine the important parameters of the sink models. Studies conducted in dynamic, flow-through environmental test chambers have quantified adsorption and desorption rates for many combinations of indoor air pollutants and interior surfaces. The constmction of a gas manifold incorporating four mass flow controllers allowed the mixing of water saturated air with dry air to produce test streams of gas with accurate RH. Measured amounts of hydrogen were then added to the test stream. An environmental test chamber was also constructed from an insulated cooler. In Fig. 2.1-1, the general arrangement of an environmental test chamber is shown. Basically, two types of environmental test chambers can be distinguished small scale chambers with volumes ranging from a few litres to a few cubic metres, and room-size large scale chambers of the walk-in type. Both types of chambers have advantages as well as disadvantages (see Table 2.1-1) (EC, 1989).
