Syndet bar soaps were developed for sensitive skin. Their pH value usually is around 5-6, far less than that of the normal soaps (pH 9-10), which is the reason for the latter causing dermal fissures with people who need frequent washing of their hands. Alkyl polyglucoside carboxylate (INCI-name Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate (and) Lauryl Glucoside, Plantapon LGC SORB) is a new anionic surfactant with excellent performance for personal care cleansing applications. In shampoo and shower bath formulations the anionic surfactant shows a good foaming behavior. In body wash applications it improves sensorial effects. These properties make Plantapon LGC SORB suitable for several cosmetic applications, e.g., mild facial wash gel, mild baby shampoo, mild body wash for sensitive skin, wet wipes, and special sulfate-free shampoo applications. 

Potentially, individuals with low activities of the enzymes phenol sulfotransferase and glucuronyl-transferase may be more susceptible to phenol toxicity. Persons with ulcerative colitis may have an impaired capacity to sulfate phenol (Ramakrishna et al. 1991), which may increase the amount of unchanged phenol that is absorbed following oral exposure. Neonates may also be more susceptible to toxicity from dermally-applied phenol because of increased skin permeability and proportionately greater surface area. A study in which 10-day-old rats were more sensitive to lethality following oral exposure to phenol than 5-week-old or adult rats (Deichmann and Witherup 1944) further suggests that the young may be more sensitive to phenol. (For a more detailed discussion please see Section 2.6.) Because phenol is a vesicant, individuals with sensitive skin or pulmonary incapacity may be more sensitive to phenol. Individuals with kidney or liver diseases that impair metabolism or excretion of phenol and phenol metabolites may be more susceptible to phenol. 

Sensitive skin may become excessively red, edematous, blistered, or crusted. If these effects occur, discontinue medication until skin integrity is restored or adjust to a tolerable level. True contact allergy is rare.

Liquid detergents based on Pilot Calsoft, Cal suds and Calfoam surfactants produce safe, effective suds with excellent grease-cutting properties for hand dishwashing. Detergents containing Calamide C are especially mild to sensitive skin. 

Petrolatum This is all over the place, found in many cosmetics, including lipsticks, creams (and baby ointments), petroleum jelly, and even eye shadow. Some people with sensitive skin say it causes allergic reactions. The reasons to avoid are twofold it s derived from petroleum, a nonrenewable resource. And organic beauty folks say it doesn t allow skin to breathe. 

Alternative procedures are paddle dyeing for sensitive skins in an open vessel, and immersion dyeing, in which the leather passes through a dye solution and is subsequently squeezed by a roller. Spraying and roller machines have mostly replaced other techniques such as traditional brush dyeing, which colors the surface only. 

The pH-values of cosmetic products are often stated on the packaging or mentioned in advertisements. Expressions like pH neutral or skin friendly pH are used, and their role is usually to convince customers about mildness and safety of the product, or its suitability for intended use, for example, low pH of a product for intimate hygiene or sensitive skin.
