Cloves can cause local skin irritation, pulmonary oedema, mouth sensitivity and sudden lower airway closure. In addition, smoking clove cigarettes can damage soft tissues and injure the airway finings (Fetrow and Avila, 1999). 

Clove oil is reported to cause skin irritation and sensitization in humans. Despite its possible toxicity in high dosage levels, eugenol (and presumably cloves and clove derivatives) is considered nontoxic at normal use levels. ...
