Skin cleansing sensitization

Local - Occasionally, redness, swelling, and itching at the injection site may develop. This reaction occurs if the injection is not properly made, if the skin is sensitive to the cleansing solution, or if the patient is allergic to insulin or insulin additives (eg, preservatives). 

Cleansing products, by physicochemical action, are used to wash and remove materials deposited from outside or excreted from the skin. This helps to keep the skin clean and facilitate normal physiological and homeostatic skin functions. Without proper cleansing, residual materials on the skin might decompose or be denatured by oxygen, UV radiation, or microbial transformation to the undesirable material that interferes with skin metabohsm or even damages skin, especially sensitive skin, such as atopic or dry skin. Alkyl polyglucoside carboxylate (INCI-name Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate (and) Lauryl Glucoside, Plantapon LGC SORB) is a new anionic surfactant with excellent performance for personal care cleansing applications. In shampoo and shower bath formulations the anionic surfactant shows a good foaming behavior. In body wash applications it improves sensorial effects. Post-peel erythema can be perfectly normal (Figure 37.5) or a warning sign of a more serious complication. Erythema can occur as a reaction even after simply cleansing thin and sensitive skin before a peel. If an erythema develops after the skin has been cleansed gently and without acid products, it may be concluded that it is hypersensitive and should be treated with caution. 

In some cases, the generation of copious foam is not important or is even undesirable in very mild products designed for sensitive skins. Indeed, foam generation can often be perceived as a signal of the presence of irritating cleansing materials. Therefore, foam-generation speed and quantity are not key attributes in baby care products, where mildness is the first benefit to be delivered. 

Quats are used as antiseptics in hospitals, where infection with pathogenic Staphylococci is a major problem [6]. For general skin disinfection, they are not recommended to be used alone because the organisms can be trapped between the surface of the skin and the inactive side of the molecular film [6]. They can be used in combination with other disinfectant molecules, such as chlorhexidine, for wound cleansing. Human toxicity is very low, although skin irritancy and sensitization have been occasionally reported.
