Search Portals

Technical Report Archive Image Library (TRAIL), www.technicalreports.org (accessed December 15,2010). A resource of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), TRAIL is an initiative led by the University of Arizona in collaboration with CRL and other interested agencies to identify, digitize, archive, and provide access to federal technical reports issued prior to 1975, according to their Web site. 

Virtual Technical Reports Center, www.lib.umd.edu/ENGIN/TechReports/ Virtual-TechReports.html (accessed August 10, 2010). Maintained by the technical reports librarian at the University of Maryland, this site provides links to technical reports, preprints, reprints, dissertations, theses, and research reports of all kinds generated by domestic and international agencies. 

In addition to Internet sites mentioned in specific categories, there are a number of sites that should be browsed periodically. These include  

American Association for the Advancement of Science, www.aaas.org (accessed August 10, 2010). Stated to provide advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people (from Web site). 

Internet Scont Project, http //scout.wisc.edn/index.php (accessed October 20, 2010). Housed at the University of Wisconsin and funded by the National Science Foundation, Mellon Foundation, and others, the Internet Scont Project has focused on developing better tools and services for finding, filtering, and presenting online information and metadata, and produces the Scout Report, one of the Web s oldest and most respected current awareness services. Published every Friday since 1994, it is read by more than 250,000 readers every week. Scanning issues weekly or searching the archives can reveal many useful resources, (from Web page).

Recapitulating, large search engines are useful to obtain a fast ovemew of search terms. To get more detailed information one has to enter qualified, specialised portals or even utilize databases (see above). 

If users are inexperienced in searching for information, they should first consult search engines, meta-databases or portals (Table 5-6). Searchers who are familiar with databases may consult known databases (numeric databases, bibliographic databases, etc.) directly, being aware that they might miss new data sources (see Section 5.18). The reliability and quality of data are only given in peer-reviewed data sources.

The National Library of Medicine has created a vast and patient-oriented healthcare information portal called MEDLINEplus. Within this Internet-based system are health topic pages which hst links to available materials relevant to isobutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency. Log on to httpvywww.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/healthtopics.html To access this system. From there you can either search using the alphabetical index or browse by broad topic areas. The Internet is also an excellent resource for finding professional resume writers, because many of these services operate primarily over the Internet and communicate with clients via e-mail and telephone. Using any Internet search engine or information portal (such as Yahoo , Excite , or AltaVista, for example), enter a search phrase such as "resume preparation," "resume creation," "resume writing," or "resume tips" to find a listing of the websites of professional resume writers available for hire. 

Using any Internet search engine or portal, you can enter a keyword such as "resume," "job," "career," "job listings," or "help wanted" to find thousands of websites of interest to you. While Chapter 7 discusses how you can tap the power of the Internet in several different ways to help you find and land a job, the following is a listing of just some of the online resources available to you ...

Although the resource sites mentioned earlier provide a convenient way to view a wide variety of information, it will eventually be necessary for the researcher to look for information or views elsewhere. The two main approaches to Web research are the portal and the search engine. 

Some of these files are accessible throngh more than one portal, with different search engines and charging protocols. For example. Current Contents Search is available on DIALOG charged on a per-search, per-hit, per-print basis.

Over the past few years many reports have been published on pharmacoeconomics, pricing, and reimbursement issues. Most of the major market research firms that cover the pharmaceutical industry have published on these topics. URL http //www.ieee.org. IEEE is a non-profit, technical professional association of more than 360,000 individual members in approximately 175 countries. The IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization is a separate corporation closely affiliated with the IEEE. IEEE standards and publications are in technical areas ranging from biomedical technology and computer engineering to electric power, aerospace, and consumer electronics. They have almost 900 active standards with 700 under development. IEEE standards can be searched and purchased on their Web site. The site also links to portals for IEEE standards activities in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. 

Because some institutions ban traffic from nonstandard ports like 9081, it is intended eventually to change the url to http //cassini.nesc.gla.ac.uk/wps/portal. Certain features of the site require a modern version of Java, but this is not required for the actual BLAST search. The choice of web browser should not be critical, but if one has problems with older browsers (e.g., Internet Explorer 5.1 for Macintosh) one is advised to try a more modern browser.
