Major Markets

The significant growth of SBC is the direct result of its remarkable versatility. The unique combination of high transparency, good economics and outstanding impact resistance of SBC are a starting point for many clear applications. On top of that, its ability to be used on most types of processing equipment with only minor modifications makes it easy to run at most converters. When SBC themselves may not be the optimum choice for an application, their demonstrated ability to be modified in polymer blends offers additional options. The ability to be blended in both clear and opaque blends allows the manufacturer to optimize both performance characteristics and polymer cost.

Boric acid is also an important boron compound with major markets in textile products. Use of borax as a mild antiseptic is minor in terms of dollars and tons. Boron compounds are also extensively used in the manufacture of borosilicate glasses. Other boron compounds show promise in treating arthritis. 

The industrial value of furfuryl alcohol is a consequence of its low viscosity, high reactivity, and the outstanding chemical, mechanical, and thermal properties of its polymers, corrosion resistance, nonburning, low smoke emission, and exceUent char formation. The reactivity profile of furfuryl alcohol and resins is such that final curing can take place at ambient temperature with strong acids or at elevated temperature with latent acids. Major markets for furfuryl alcohol resins include the production of cores and molds for casting metals, corrosion-resistant fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs), binders for refractories and corrosion-resistant cements and mortars. 

Auto uses are said to account for about one-third of the 30000 tonnes of silicone rubber consumed annually around the world (in turn about 10% of total silicone consumption). Specific uses include shaft sealing rings, spark plug caps, O-rings (the major market for the fluorosilicones), gaskets, coolant and heater hoses for buses and trucks, and ignition cables. 

SBS. These now have a major market share, partieularly in developing eountries. Traditional formulas have been based on 10-20 parts of SEES, 50-70 parts of an aliphatic tackifier, and 20-30 parts of oil. Formulas with SIS or SBS have more diffieulty passing transfer tests, requiring considerable formulation to meet all the requirements above. Successful formulas rely on higher softening point polymers, by virtue of higher molecular weight styrene end blocks. 

A major market which has developed for fabric fillers is for the control ot flue-gas fly ash in the utility industry. This market is primarily at the expen.se of electrostatic precipitators. Fabric filters have the inherent advantage of operating at a high level of collection efficiency tor a wide range of dust and gas conditions. 

Major markets for polyurethanes are furniture, transportation, and building and construction. Other uses include carpet underlay, textural laminates and coatings, footwear, packaging, toys, and fibers.

Over the years innovations in aircraft have given rise to more new plastic developments and have kept the plastics industry profits at a higher level than any other major market principally since they can meet different environmental and load conditions. Virtually all plastics have received the benefit of the aircraft industry s uplifting influence. Practically all conceivable top quality plastics are used to provide cost advantages and improvements... 

Plastic also refers to a material that has a physical characteristic such as plasticity and toughness. The general term commodity plastic, engineering plastic, advanced plastic, advanced reinforced plastic, or advanced plastic composite is used to indicate different performance materials. These terms and others will be reviewed latter in this chapter. Plastics are made into specialty products that have developed into major markets. An example is plastic foams that can provide flexibility to rigidity as well as other desired properties (heat and electrical insulation, toughness, filtration, etc.). 

Practically only thermoplastics go through extruders no major markets have been developed to date for extruded thermosets. 

Drug Launches. Drug Launches [66] records and documents new product launches throughout the world. Data are compiled directly by 60 IMS companies located throughout the major markets of the world. Each entry records trade names, active ingredients, marketing companies, pack information, launch date, indication, and therapy class. This product is commercially available in several formats. 

Not all plants produce one major product. Some plants, called multipurpose plants, may use the same equipment to produce a number of different products. This might be true for insecticides or herbicides. The major market for these chemicals is in the spring and early summer. If another product could be produced for fall and winter consumption, such as a de-icer additive for gasolines, then the plant could be operated all year with a minimum amount of storage. Such a plant would probably not be the optimum plant for either process, but the company s over-all profits would be greater than if two separate plants were built. 

Reference pricing was not introduced in Spain until December 2000. The fact that it is applied exclusively to bio-equivalent products leads, in the opinion of the authors, to the assumption that its effect on expenditure is limited, as a major market share is acquired by recently introduced drugs. The level at which the reference price is fixed is an important factor. For non-patented products, price competition should push the price towards the marginal cost, and therefore a reference price that is clearly higher than the cheapest generic could actually become a barrier to price competition in this case. 

Butyl alcohol is not the principal use of butanal obtained by propene hydro formylation. Rather its major market is 2-ethylhexanol that is prepared via aldol condensation followed by hydrogenation. [4] Thus formation of alcohols when aldehydes are desired is not only a direct efficiency loss, but also the alcohol impurity will form hemiacetals and acetals that complicate refining and lead to increased operating costs. 

Situated between the solid and gaseous states as the only non-metallic element liquid at ambient temperature, bromine is sandwiched in the periodic table between the ubiquitous chlorine and the rather rare iodine. In terms of production volumes it is neither a bulk commodity chemical like chlorine, nor a speciality chemical like iodine. And commercially, bromine is beset by uncertainty. Until the 1970s, the major market forbromine was in dibromoethane - a co-additive for leaded petrol. The phase-out of lead in petrol could have spelled the collapse of the bromine industry, but alternative bromine markets developed and the industry both rationalised and flourished. However, although world bromine production continues to increase slowly, fresh environmental concerns have emerged and the industry is once more under threat. Details are given. 19 refs. 

Table 21.1, adapted from data in M.G. Beal s presentation at the 1997 SCI London International Chlorine Symposium, shows the pattern of consumption of chlorine in the USA in 1995 [1]. Figures for other markets or for different years will show some variation from this pattern. In the recent past, however, the high proportion of chlorine entering the vinyl chain is a feature of all major markets. 

Major market opportunities and potential applications for renewable raw materials (RRM) fall into four main areas chemicals, speciality chemicals, industrial fibers and industrial oils [7]. 

Last, but certainly not least in the milieu of finding a new drug candidate, is in-house S5mthesis of unique chemical entities. Companies that introduce truly unique NCEs into major markets (1) often enjoy the satisfaction of being able to ameliorate or cure diseases that, before the advent of their NCE, could not be adequately treated (2) enjoy a major... 

Cargill Dow has some commercial applications in Europe and Asia. A major market has been blister packaging used to wrap such products as Sony Walkman radios and digital versatile discs (DVDs). 

A major market for U.S. 1, 2-dibromoethane production has been overseas, although export levels have been declining. The U.S. export level of 1, 2-dibromoethane in 1981 was 29.8 million pounds. This was substantially lower than in 1978 when the U.S. export level was 84.8 million pounds (Santodonato et al. 1985). 

On the other hand, fuel cell applications and the market will determine the priority order of these requirements. The major markets or applications where fuel cells have been applied or have a large potential to be applied include [1] ... 

Full drug development involves management of the whole project from early proof of concept to post-launch activities. The very large financial and human resource costs associated with scale up of a development project from early phase work through to Phase 111 and launch in major markets require that the risks associated with the investment are managed appropriately.
