Our starting point will be based on examples of the activities of science, rather than on definitions. We will perform these activities, beginning on familiar ground. On such ground, where you know the answer, you will best see the steps by which science advances. [Pg.1]

Prior to the development of quantum mechanics, the spectrum of the hydrogen atom posed quite a dilemma. To see the problem, and how it was resolved, let s go back about fifty or sixty years and trace the history of this problem. This is a valuable example because it shows how science advances. [Pg.259]

Interest has been expressed in the possibility of using biomarker assays as a part of risk assessment for regulatory purposes, and some workers have suggested tiered testing procedures that follow this approach (see, for example, Handy et al. 2003). It is to be hoped that regulatory schemes, such as that of REACH (see European Union 2003), will be sufficiently flexible to incorporate new assays and testing strategies as the science advances. [Pg.324]

Early developments in polymers were largely empirical because of a lack of knowledge of polymer science. Advancement in polymers was rapid in the 1930s and 1940s because of the theories developed by Staudinger, Carothers, Mark, and many other scientists. [Pg.754]

In computer science, advances have been made on several forefronts. These include the study by Crutchfield and colleagues of the emergence of pseudo-particles in cellular automata, where the particle interactions can carry out computations. [Pg.123]

Thus, much work lies ahead. As the field of forensic science advances, forensic pharmacologists and toxicologists will continue to be integral players in bringing truth to our system of justice. [Pg.124]

Some non-scientists, and sadly too many scientists, seem to think that science advances only when new techniques or equipment allow novel experiments to be conducted. The media tends to encourage this view because expensive kit always looks impressive (the finest recent example is the Giant Hadron Collider at CERN). However, sometimes it is ideas that are needed, and ideas are hard to capture visually and often difficult to explain in simple terms. Worse still, ideas cost nothing hence in a society where money is everything, ideas seem unimpressive. This attitude has even infected science management in many countries where schemes have been set up to identify the best science by judging the cash inputs rather than the long-term scientihc outputs, it may interest some readers to know that the author of this book has never received any financial support for any of his work on NTs. [Pg.227]

Some chapters overlap in general content (e.g., basic principles of stable isotopes in precipitation are covered to different degrees in all stable isotope chapters), but no attempt was made to limit authors discussion of principles, or somehow attempt to arrive at a consensus view on any specific topic. Because science advances by critical discussion of concepts, such restrictions were viewed as counterproductive. This does mean that different chapters may present different views on reliability of paleoelevation estimates, and readers are advised to read other chapters in the book on related topics - they may be more closely linked than they might at first appear ... [Pg.284]

The continuous confrontation of model predictions with experimental results and vice versa is also a hallmark of most areas of natural science. Advanced mathematical concepts and methods have traditionally been considered less useful in the life sciences, partly, of course, because living systems are so much more complicated than most of the systems that we have been concerned with in physics and chemistry. However, this state of affairs is coming to an end. Today Systems Biology is considered as one of the most exciting areas of science, and many professional biological and physiological journals publish detailed model studies, side by side with purely empirical studies. [Pg.32]

In the Egyptian Mysteries, Man was composed of various spiritual and mental components as well as the physical component and each had its proper "medicine." These Secret Sciences advanced over time and tales of wondrous healing oils, life-giving potions, and imitations of gold and precious stones have survived even to our day. [Pg.9]
