V2O5-P205 (95 5, molar ratio) cathode and a lithium anode (Li/a-V205 cell) [1]. In this section, we describe safety test results for AA Li/a- V2Os cells. The AA cell we fabricated has a pressure vent, a Polyswitch (PS, Raychem Co., thermal and current fuse) and is composed of a spirally wound cathode sheet, a metallic Li-based anode sheet and a polyethylene (PE) separator [87]. [Pg.353]

The third point is to consider and review all test results in the context of the procedure under evaluation. Safety test results are not like NMR or melting point data. In order to be useful they must be evaluated with the process and equipment in mind. [Pg.69]

The final point is to transfer the test results to the people who can use them. Not only are the safety test results important during process planning, they are also important during the actual... [Pg.69]

Most hafnium compounds requite no special safety precautions because hafnium is nontoxic under normal exposure. Acidic compounds such as hafnium tetrachloride hydroly2e easily to form strongly acidic solutions and to release hydrogen chloride fumes, and these compounds must be handled properly. Whereas laboratory tests in which soluble hafnium compounds were injected into animals did show toxicity, feeding test results indicated essentially no toxicity when hafnium compounds were taken orally (33,34). [Pg.443]

Health and Safety Factors. Results of acute oral toxicity studies of 2-pyrrohdinone on white rats and guinea pigs show the LD q to be 6.5 ml,/kg. Skin patch tests on 200 human subjects indicate that 2-pyrrohdinone is a skin kritant, but there is no indication of sensitising action. It is a mild eye irritant (79). [Pg.361]

The U.S. standard pertussis vacciae is used to standardize the potency of the whole ceU pertussis vacciae. The number of protective units Hi the vaccine is estimated for each lot from the results of simultaneous intracerebral mouse-protection tests of the vaccine being studied and the U.S. reference standard (14,17). The potency of the aceUular vaccines is estimated by then abUity to produce antibodies to the proteins Hi the vaccine Hi a mouse model. These vaccines also undergo a series of animal safety tests to ensure that the iaactivation and toxoiding steps were carried out correctiy (14,17). [Pg.357]

The accident resulted from a routine safety test of some electrical control equipment at the start of a normal reactor shutdown for routine maintenance. The test was to determine the ability to continue to draw electrical power from a turbine generator during the first minute of coast-down following a station blackout. In a blackout, the reactor automatically scrams and diesel generators start to assume load (about 1 minute required). [Pg.224]

The basic considerations regarding the cell safety and the test results are described briefly below. [Pg.353]

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) requires that consumer batteries pass a number of safety tests [3]. UL requires that a battery withstand a short circuit without fire or explosion. A positive temperature coefficient (PTC) device [4] is used for external short-circuit protection. The resistance of a PTC placed in series with the cell increases by orders of magnitude at high currents and resulting high temperatures. However, in the case of an internal short, e.g., if the positive tab comes lose and contacts the interior of the negative metal can, the separator could act as a fuse. That is, the impedance of the separator increases by two to three orders of magnitude due to an increase in cell temperature. [Pg.554]

Our computer model predicted the Phase I test results with accuracy adequate for safety design even though there were experimental errors. To reduce these experimental errors. In Phase I I, we made some equipment modifications and used a larger reactor. [Pg.341]

Although there is much controversy over using animals in tests such as these, the information is an essential part of the legal testing required when new chemicals are introduced onto the market in significant quantities. These and other toxicity test results are used to help develop Material Safety Data Sheets, establish Occupational Exposure Limits and guidelines for use of appropriate safety equipment. [Pg.31]

The approved color additives appear on positive lists issued by the Food and Drug Administration in the US, the EU, and Japan, but the colorants permitted in each market vary considerably. US and EU regulatory organizations provide provisional and permanent lists of approved color additives. The permanently listed additives are considered safe for use in cosmetic and toiletry products by the regulatory bodies. Provisionally listed color additives are those on which some safety studies are still to be undertaken or their test results are under review. The Japanese regulations include only a permanent list of color additives. [Pg.584]

The easiest means for assessing occupational exposure hazards associated with materials used in a process is through the use of Permissible or Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL or PEL) which go by a variety of names for example, TLV (U.S. - American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists), MAK (Germany), or individual company established values. Occupational exposure limits are usually set based on a combination of the inherent toxicological hazard of a chemical and a series of safety factors such as intraspecies variability in test results, nature and severity of the effect, adequacy and quality of... [Pg.242]

TSCATS is an online index to unpublished, nonconfidential studies covering chemical testing results and adverse effects of chemicals on health and ecological systems. The studies are submitted by US industry to EPA under several sections of the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA). There are four types of documents in the database Section 4 chemical testing results, Section 8(d) health and safety studies, Section 8(e) substantial risk of injury to health or the environment notices, and voluntary documents submitted to EPA known as a For Your Information (FYI) notice. [Pg.310]

Lubiprostone is contraindicated in patients with a history of mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction. Safety has not been established in pregnant women animal studies indicated the potential to cause fetal loss. Women who could become pregnant should have a negative pregnancy test result prior to beginning therapy with lubiprostone. [Pg.310]

Some of the challenges facing the industrial laboratory are limited resources, cost containment, productivity, timeliness of test results, chemical safety, spent chemicals disposal, technician capability, analytical capability, disappearing skills, and reliability of test results. The present R D climate in the chemical industry is one of downsizing at corporate level (lean and mean), erosion of boundaries between basic and applied science, and polymer science and analytical chemistry as Cinderella subjects. Difficult chemical analyses are often run by insufficiently skilled workers (a managerial issue). [Pg.725]

This section discusses how the interpretation, evaluation, and correlation of test results from bench-scale equipment can be integrated into an approach to inherent process safety involving reactive systems. [Pg.129]
