Automobile safety

Specific Tests. Federal (United States) Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (MVSS) 302 is used to measure the burning behavior of materials used in automobile interiors. A specimen is mounted horizontally and ignited for 15 seconds. The burning rate should be below 10 cm /min. The test specimen is 35.5 X 10.1 cm by the actual thickness (up to 1.3 cm). Automakers typically impose more severe criteria than the 10 cm /min in the standard. [Pg.466]

Consider again, for example, the case of the flat tire on an automobile. The initiating event in this case is the flat tire. There are two safety functions which can be defined a spare tire and an emergency road patrol. Other safety functions might be included depending on the particular situation. [Pg.474]

Automobile safety air bags use sodium azide [26628-22-8] NaN, for gas generation. It can be made from hydrazine by refluxing ethyl or Abutyl nitrite with hydrazine hydrate and sodium hydroxide in alcohol (209,210) ... [Pg.291]

Economics and price of the final article often dictate a specific type of mbber that can be used. The expected usable life for the product is controlled by many factors including end customer awareness, competitive situation in the marketplace, safety, reUabiUty, and other factors. Rubber is almost always used as a functional part of another system. For example tires, hoses, belts, O-rings, and numerous mbber components are used in manufacturing automobiles and tmcks. The overall life of the vehicle as well as its performance level often control or direcdy relate to the service life or quaUty level of the mbber parts. [Pg.230]

Sohd tantalum capacitors have a high volumetric capacitance which makes them attractive for use in miniaturized electronic systems like cellular telephones, hand-held video cameras, and personal computers. The insensitivity of their capacitance to temperature and their abiUty to operate at temperature extremes explains why these devices are used in such harsh environments as automobile engine compartments. Sohd tantalum capacitors are extremely rehable and, therefore, are often the capacitor of choice in critical appHcations like spacecraft electronics, pacemakers, and safety equipment. [Pg.330]

Boron mixed with an oxidizer is used as a pyrotechnic. This ordnance appHcation for missiles and rockets is predominandy military. However, boron is also used in air bags, placed in automobiles as safety devices, for initiating the sodium azide [26628-22-8] which fiHs the bag with nitrogen (13). Other boron compounds are also used in the air-bag pyrotechnic appHcation. [Pg.184]

The first use for butyl mbber was ia inner tubes, the air-retention characteristics of which contributed significantly to the safety and convenience of tires. Good weathefing, ozone resistance, and oxidative stabiUty have led to appHcations ia mechanical goods and elastomeric sheeting. Automobile tires were manufactured for a brief period from butyl mbber, but poor abrasion resistance restricted this development at the time. [Pg.480]

In the United States, regulation of emissions from new automotive vehicles has followed the prototype-replicate route. The argument for routine annual automobile inspection is that cars should be regularly inspected for safety (brakes, lights, steering, and tires) and that the additional time and cost required to check the car s emission control system during the same inspection will be minimal. Such an inspection certainly pinpoints cars whose emission control system has been removed, altered, damaged, or deteriorated and force such defects to be remedied. The question is whether... [Pg.423]

Automobile and marine fuel handling is covered in NFPA 30A. This section addresses specific operations in which static electricity has caused fires and injury. Relevance to the CPI includes employee safety programs and company-owned gasoline fueling depots. [Pg.163]

Laminated safety glass has now become standard for automobile windscreens and is used for aircraft glazing. [Pg.394]

As stated previously, traceability is fundamental to establishing and eliminating the root cause of nonconforming product and therefore it should be mandatory in view of the requirements for Corrective Action. Providing traceability can be an onerous task. Some applications require products to be traced back to the original ingot from which they were produced. In situations of safety or national security it is necessary to identify product in such a manner because if a product is used in a critical application and subsequently found defective, it may be necessary to track down all other products of the same batch and eliminate them before there is a disaster. It happens in product recall situations. It is also very important in the automobile and food industries in fact, any industry where human life may be at risk due to a defective product being in circulation. [Pg.341]

Driving by personal vehicle is the most popular mode of transportation. And although there is a desire for a fuel-efficient automobile, fuel efficiency is a consideration well behind style, performance, comfort, durability, reliability, status, and safety. The weak demand for a 40 mpg automobile occurs for several reasons It is not a status symbol (not stylistic), accelerates too slowly (smaller engine), cramps the driver and occupants (smaller interior), and often offers inadequate protection (too light) in case of an accident. [Pg.133]

Comite des Constructeurs d Automobiles du Marche Commun represents joint industry opinion on factors such as lubricant specifications, emissions, vehicle design and safety standards. With regard to crankcase lubricants, CCMC defines sequences of engine tests, and the tests themselves are defined by CEC (Coordinating European Committee for the Development of Performance Tests for Lubricants and Engine Euels a joint body of the oil and motor industries). [Pg.851]

Polyfvinyl butyral) is used as the plastic laminate in the preparation of automobile windshield safety glass. How would you synthesize this polymer ... [Pg.1222]

Polycarbonate It is a tough, transparent plastic that offers resistance to bullets and thrown projectiles in glazing for vehicles, buildings, and security installations. It with stands boiling water, but is less resistant to weather and scratching than acrylics. It is notch-sensitive and has poor solvent resistance in stressed molded products. Use includes coffee makers, food blenders, automobile lenses, safety helmets, lenses, and many nonburning electrical applications. [Pg.428]

In this context, Benson and Ponton declare that while the chemical industry has made considerable achievements in reactor performance, safety and control, comparable to those in the microelectronics business, this success is by no means evident to the public, in deep contrast to the latter [139], It is said that this is mainly and in a way simply due to the visual recognition of chemical production plants. From a distance and for somebody outside the field, the chemical plants of the late 1940s and the early 1990s look virtually similar, whereas one is able immediately to see the big differences in, e.g., television sets and automobiles. Hence it is not evident that notable improvements were made over the decades. [Pg.82]

Insurance costs also depend on the safety precautions taken. When a homeowner buys fire insurance the cost depends on the type of construction and the nearness and effectiveness of fire protection equipment, as well as the value of house and its furnishings. To determine the effect of these factors a statistical analysis is made of the factors contributing to fire losses. Insurance companies are noted for not losing money, and so rates also depend on the past record of those insured. In determining automobile insurance rates the age and the number of previous accidents and traffic... [Pg.91]
