Where loss of control could lead to severe consequences, the integrity of the basic process control system and the protective safeguards must be designed, operated and maintained to a high standard. Industry standards such as ANSI/ISA-S84.01 (1996) and IEC 61508 (2000) address the issues of how to design, operate and maintain safety instrumented systems such as high temperature interlocks to achieve the necessary level of functional safety. The scope of these standards includes hardware, software, human factors and management (HSE 2000). [Pg.108]

In summary, there have been several physical/mechanical means developed to improve the functionality, safety, and sensory properties of psyllium. These previous investigations have indicated the possibility to improve the physicochemical, sensory, biological properties of psyllium for its optimal applications in foods. However, none of them could sufficiently solve the strong gelling and extreme water-uptake problems of psyllium. [Pg.206]

To represent the module cooling behavior, it is convenient to define the heat dissipation capability as the ratio of total heat generated to the maximum temperature difference experienced by the switch assembly. This ratio can then be plotted as a fnnction of coolant flow rate to establish the operating range and functional safety margins. Reference [31] shows the heat dissipation capability of the heat sink assembly. [Pg.100]

Cost-effectiveness and mass deployment of critical systems in combination with non-critical systems is a trend, where many other application areas will benefit from, so that there is a clear need not only for application-specific ICT-technology, but for generic dependable ICT-technology (hardware, software, SoC (Systems-on-Chip), building blocks, communication) which fulfils the requirements of generic functional safety and security standards as well as of sector-specific ones (certification to create trust in these systems ). [Pg.167]

The generic standard of the safety community is IEC 61508, Functional Safety of E/E/PE safety-related Systems. The engineering community has built a set of standards based on IEC 61508 for specific sectors, taking into account the experiences, background knowledge and requirements the process control sector, medical sector, nuclear, railways, and is still continuing (e.g., automotive in progress). But this standard takes only the safety view, security is not even mentioned ... [Pg.167]

NOTE 1 Activities relating to verification, management of functional safety and functional safety assessment are... [Pg.170]

It has been demonstrated, that mass deployment of networked, dependable embedded systems with critical control functions require a new, holistic system view on safety critical and security critical systems. Both communities have to interact, communicate and integrate at the end. A unified approach to address the safety AND security requirements of safety related systems is proposed, based on the functional safety standard IEC 61508 and IT-Security management standards, handbooks and guidelines. [Pg.173]

To protect the gearbox and the screw shaft against overload arising on the one hand from the process and on the other hand from the substantial inertia of the motor, the clutch between the motor and the gearbox is designed as a safety clutch. With a properly functioning safety clutch, unavoidable overloads will not lead to significant downtimes for the plant. [Pg.340]

Safety pharmacology is defined as the field that investigates the potentially undesirable pharmacodynamic effects of a substance on physiological functions in relation to exposure in the therapeutic range and above. It is also called functional safety. [Pg.2338]
