Ship-shaped FPSOs must be designed to weather vane i.e. must have the ability to rotate in the direction of wind or current. This requires complex mooring systems and the connections with the well heads must be able to accommodate the movement. The mooring systems can be via a single buoy or, in newer vessels designed for the harsh environments of the North Sea, via an internal or external turret. Figure 10.33 shows a schematic of the Shell-BP Foinaven FPSO. [Pg.266]

In principle any PC can be used, provided it has the necessary computing power and memory installed and can be equipped with the processor board, which requires an empty PCI slot in the PC. For using the system in the field, it is recommended to use an industrial PC, designed to be used in a harsh environment. [Pg.785]

Insulator Walls. Because of the unavailabiUty of electrically insulating materials which can withstand the harsh environment inside coal-fired channels, the insulator walls of the channel are typically made of metal elements which are insulated from each other to prevent any net flow of current. Like electrode walls, insulator walls are designed to operate with a slag coating. [Pg.430]

Parts made from fluoroelastomers ate used ia appHcations that justify their high cost, usually where the maintenance and replacement costs are high enough to offset the initial cost of the part. These include automotive appHcations such as valve stem seals, fuel injector components, radiator, crankcase and transmission seals, and carburetor needle tips. Numerous seals and gaskets in the marine, oilfield, and chemical processing industries employ fluoroelastomers. In addition, many hoses in the automotive and chemical industry are made entirely of fluoroelastomer compounds or have a veneer of the fluoroelastomer as a barrier exposed to the harsh environment. Seals and gaskets in military appHcations and the binder for flares and missile appHcations ate made with fluoroelastomers. [Pg.234]

Sohd tantalum capacitors have a high volumetric capacitance which makes them attractive for use in miniaturized electronic systems like cellular telephones, hand-held video cameras, and personal computers. The insensitivity of their capacitance to temperature and their abiUty to operate at temperature extremes explains why these devices are used in such harsh environments as automobile engine compartments. Sohd tantalum capacitors are extremely rehable and, therefore, are often the capacitor of choice in critical appHcations like spacecraft electronics, pacemakers, and safety equipment. [Pg.330]

The gas turbine eontrol loop eontrols the Inlet Guide Vanes (IGV) and the Gas Turbine Inlet Temperature (TIT). The TIT is defined as the temperature at the inlet of the first stage turbine nozzle. Presently, in 99% of the units, the inlet temperature is eontrolled by an algorithm, whieh relates the turbine exhaust temperature, or the turbine temperature after the gasifier turbine, the eompressor pressure ratio, the eompressor exit temperature, and the air mass flow to the turbine inlet temperature. New teehnologies are being developed to measure the TIT direetly by the use of pyrometers and other speeialized probes, whieh eould last in these harsh environments. The TIT is eontrolled by the fuel flow and the IGV, whieh eontrols the total air mass... [Pg.639]

Like the 1-RTV systems, the two-part room temperature vulcanization systems (2-RTV) cure to produce flexible elastomers that resist humidity and other harsh environments. Interestingly, they display primerless adhesion property to many substrates, and are used in silicone adhesives, sealants, seals, and gaskets, to name a few. [Pg.685]

Cure systems based on hydrosilylation can be formulated as one and two-part silicone products, that can be either flowing or non-flowing. These formulations provide fast thermal cure rates, they are resistant to humid and other harsh environments, and they have good dielectric properties. These formulations can be self-priming or alternatively the substrate may require priming before application of the silicone. [Pg.687]

Analysis of Dependent Failure Events and Failure Events Caused by Harsh Environment Conditions Nuclear 700 events representing common cause failures and failures caused by harsh environments Licensee Event Reports on failures of 26 component and subcomponent types listed below 94. [Pg.91]

This is a letter report from JBF Associates Inc., to Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) summarizing JBF s efforts to analyze dependent (common cause) failures and failures caused by harsh environments. The information used for the analysis was ta)cen from over 1000 failure reports (mostly abstracts of LERs that were assembled for other studies). The 26 groups of components selected for study are accumulators, batteries, cables, control rod drives,... [Pg.94]

With such properties, it could be the ideal material for many semiconductor applications, such as high-power and high-frequency transistors and cold cathodes, or in the harsh environment found in internal-combustion and jet engines. With the advent of CVD diamond, it is now possible to take advantage of these properties. [Pg.362]

Even though environmental toxicology could have profound effects on the HS response, there are other considerations where manipulation of the HS response could be beneficial. For example, constitutive induction of the HS response in bacteria could be a potential means to develop super-microbes which could withstand harsh environments while engaging in their genetically-designed function such as scouring oil spills and enzymatically converting toxins into harmless substances. [Pg.448]

Other common uses include gaskets and seals for hydraulic systems in harsh environments, such as mining operations, where abrasion is a constant hazard. We take advantage of the... [Pg.397]
