Rusting and corrosion

Painting of all metallic surfaces of a switchgear or a controlgear assembly is an essential requirement to provide it with an aesthetic appearance, on the one hand, and to prevent it from rust and corrosion, on the other. Painting serves these purposes by providing the machine with a hard and longer-lasting metallic surface. We describe briefly, the basic procedure to paint and test painted surfaces. In the discussion, we have laid more emphasis on MS sheet-metal surfaces as these are more typical. 

SC Service typical of petrol engines in 1964-1967 cars and trucks. Oils designed for this service provide control of high- and low-temperature deposits, wear, rust and corrosion. 

SF Service typical of petrol engines in cars and some trucks from 1980. Oils developed for this service provide better oxidation stability and anti-wear performance than SE oils. They also provide protection against engine deposits, rust and corrosion. Oils meeting SF may be used wherever SE, SD or SC is recommended. 

The fuel filters were then partially blocked by rust and corrosion products carried by the water. Below-freezing temperatures possibly initiated the formation of ice within fuel filters and in fuel lines containing water. The combination of ice and corrosion products blocked fuel flow through vehicle fuel lines and filters. Gasoline flow to the engine was halted and engine shutdown followed.

Ball rust test the new bench test to replace the Sequence II D engine test to measure rust and corrosion at low temperatures.

Chromium compounds, mostly in chromium(III) or chromium(VT) forms, produced by the chemical industry are used for chrome plating, the manufacture of dyes and pigments, leather tanning, and wood preserving. Rust and corrosion mean an enormous loss to Americans, greater than that caused by fire and flood combined, a loss of at least one billion dollars a year. Rust is a skin disease. Corrosion is an infectious internal disease like tuberculosis. 

Stainless steels are in a special class, differing from other steels in being nonmagnetic and essentially free from rusting and corrosion. A typical stainless steel (type 316) contains 17 percent chromium, 12 percent nickel, and 3 percent molybdenum. The chemical resistance of stainless steel makes it very attractive for many purposes, but its cost and the difficulty of machining it limit its use somewhat. It can be silver-soldered or welded soft soldering is difficult.

Over the years, detergents have found equally important usage in many other types of lubricants, including gear oils, farm tractor hydraulic fluids, automatic transmission fluids and industrial oils. A quick trip to the grocery store reveals that many different foods are stored in cans. Soft drinks, fruits, vegetables, and even meats can be stored in cans. Cans are made from sheets of steel that are coated on both sides with pure tin. Known as tinplate, the metal is both durable and resistant to rusting and corrosion. These properties allow foods to stay fresh on the shelf for long periods of time, and to be transported long distances. More than 200 million cans are used per day in the United States alone.
