Silver solders

Lead—silver alloys are used extensively as soft solders these contain 1—6 wt % silver. Lead—silver solders have a narrower free2ing range and higher melting point (304°C) than conventional solders. Solders containing 2.5 wt % silver or less are used either as binary alloys or combined with 0.5—2 wt % tin. Lead—silver solders have excellent corrosion resistance. The composition of lead—silver solders is Hsted in ASTM B32-93 (solder alloys) (7). 

Solders. Modem dental solders are made from mostly corrosion-resistant, nontoxic metals. Minimal quantities of tin and other elements are often added, some of which could produce toxic effects in the unalloyed state. Each solder is used for specific appHcations (180—188) typical compositions and properties of solders used in dentistry are presented in Table 11. Most of the ingredients of solders are resistant to corrosion, and alloying them with other ingredients renders the alloy safe for use in appHances placed in the oral environment. Silver solders corrode, but are used only for temporary appHances. Available products do not contain cadmium, although cadmium was an ingredient of some silver solders up to ca 1980.

In general, the rate of dezincification increases as the zinc content rises, and great care needs to be exercised in making brazed joints with copper/zinc brazing alloys, particularly if they are to be exposed to sea-water. Under these conditions, a properly designed capillary joint may last for some time, but it is preferable to use corrosion-resistant jointing alloys such as silver solders (e.g. BS 1845, Type AGJ or /4G5) . 

Bonded silver linings are fabricated for mild steel or copper vessels. They are soldered in situ to the walls of the vessel by means of a special tin-silver solder. The melting point of this solder is approximately 280°C, and 200°C is recommended as the maximum continuous operating temperature for linings bonded with it. Since the whole of the silver is firmly adherent to the vessel, bonded linings are suitable for operation under vacuum conditions, and provide excellent heat-transfer characteristics. 

Heat-resisting steels have limited uses in contact with molten metals. They are not recommended for use with molten zinc, cadmium, aluminium, antimony or copper, because of excessive attack and embrittlement effects. In brazing and silver soldering, contact between the molten non-ferrous alloy and the steel occurs for only a very limited period of time.

Silver is usually found in extremely low concentrations in natural waters because of its low crustal abundance and low mobility in water (USEPA 1980). One of the highest silver concentrations recorded in freshwater (38 pg/L) occurred in the Colorado River at Loma, Colorado, downstream of an abandoned gold-copper-silver mine, an oil shale extraction plant, a gasoline and coke refinery, and a uranium processing facility (USEPA 1980). The maximum recorded value of silver in tapwater in the United States was 26 pg/L — significantly higher than finished water from the treatment plant (maximum of 5.0 pg/L) — because of the use of tin-silver solders for joining copper pipes in the home, office, or factory (USEPA 1980).
