Testing painting

Prediction of the useful life, or the remaining life, of coatings from physical or analytical measurements presents many problems in data analysis and interpretation. Two important considerations are that data must be taken over a long period of time, and the scatter from typical paint tests is large. These considerations require innovative application of statistical techniques to provide adequate prediction of the response variables of interest.

All resins except polybutadiene formulated with conventional melamine cross-linkers, applied to SAE 1010 bare steel paint test panels, and baked to yield cross-linked, solvent resistant films. 

To prepare a painted fabric for comparative purposes, small bands of ferrous oxide, an alizarin/purpurin mixture, ground up bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis L.) and bedstraw (Galium verum L.) were painted on linen fabric (Testfabrics L-57). As carriers or binder for the pigment colorants to be painted on the fibrous materials, beef fat was used as a substitute for bear grease and egg white was used as source for albumin. The various combinations of these materials were mixed and painted on areas of the test fabric as outlined in Table III. The painted test fabric was left to diy for 24 hours.

Wynder and Hoffmann (4317) described the results of mouse skin-painting tests with dibenz[a,y]acridine applied in 0.5 and 0.1% acetone solutions three times weekly to the backs of 20 Swiss female mice. After 12 to 14 months, tumors were induced in 16 (80%) and 15 (75%) mice, respectively, with 60% of the animals in each test developing carcinomas. Wynder and Hoffmann (4332) offered the following explanation for the difference between these extremely high results and the much lower one reported...

To obtain a properly formulated paint, testing has to be carried out in different stages (Chaps. 9 and 10) weathering and corrosion tests, application tests, field trials that test in-use behavior, and durability. The paints can only be used commercially when they have passed these tests. 

There are special sections which deal with different production and processing technologies. Recommendations for each target application of a coating system are provided. Finally, special treatment of state-of-the-art paint testing, analysis, environmental protection, recycling, and toxicology is offered. 

Pigments and pigment dispersions have been and continue to be evaluated for color using a wide variety of methods. Over the years Oil Ink Tests, Latex Paint Tests, Liquid Ink Tests and PVC, Rubber, and Polyethylene Two-Roll Mill Tests have been used as Quality Control methods. We did not have extensive reproducibility data for these methods, but we felt that all of them could be improved using statistical tools.
