Floor finish

Formulas for representative floor poHshes are Hsted in References 3, 12, 13, and 25. An aqueous formula may contain 0—12 wt % polymer, 0—12 wt % resin, 0—6 wt % wax, 0.3—1.5 wt % tris(butoxyethyl)phosphate, 1—6 wt % glycol ether, and 0—1 wt % zinc, with water filling the rest. Water-clear floor finishes contain Htfle or no wax, whereas buffable products contain relatively large amounts of wax. Sealers contain Htfle wax and relatively large amounts of emulsion polymers (28). For industrial use, sealers are appHed to porous substrates to fiH the pores and prevent poHshes that are used as topcoats from soaking into the floor. 

Uralkyds have superior adhesion, hardness, abrasion resistance, durabiHty, and chemical resistance to the unmodified alkyds. They find appHcations in wood floor finishes, marine coatings, metal primers, and maintenance paints. 

Ceiling, wall and floor finishes can be separated into wet and dry finishes. Below is a listing of the common types of wet and dry finishes currently in use.

The need for good design and expert installation of floor finishes cannot be emphasized too strongly. The floor receives the greatest wear of all the inner linings, and once the temperature has been reduced in the store, it will usually remain low for the rest of its life. Repairs are therefore very difficult. 

Where a store is to take post-pallets, or will have internal racking to store pallets, careful calculation is necessary of the load on the feet. They can have a considerable point load, having the effect of punching a hole through the floor finish.

Modem floor finishes contain mixtures of ingredients that when applied as a liquid dry to give a clear, durable film coating. Most floor finishes are combinations of polymers blended to provide unique and desirable characteristics such as durability, gloss retention, resistance to scuffing, fast-drying, and ease of removal. Polymers made up of more than one monomer or repeating unit are called copolymers. 

The zinc ion cross-links with the polymer to create sufficient strength and cross-linking density for durability and resistance to abrasion and detergents. The floor finish is easily removed with ammonia cleansers to reform the stable complex with zinc. The action of pulling the zinc out of the polymer allows the polymer to dissolve in the stripping solution.

Organophosphate triesters (OPERs) are used as flame retardants and/or plasticizers in a wide range of polymers, in furniture upholstery, insulation, wall coverings, and floor finishing products. Toluene diisocyanate is commonly produced as a mixture of the 2,4- and 2,6-iso-niers, that is used as a monomer in the preparation of polyurethane foams, elastomers and coatings, as a cross-linking agent for nylon-6, and as a hardener in polyurethane adhesives and finishes. In testing the abrasiveness of floor finish of man-made materials, special variations of Shore s scleroscope are commonest.
