Rosin printing inks

As solvents, the amyl alcohols are intermediate between hydrocarbon and the more water-miscible lower alcohol and ketone solvents. Eor example, they are good solvents and diluents for lacquers, hydrolytic fluids, dispersing agents in textile printing inks, industrial cleaning compounds, natural oils such as linseed and castor, synthetic resins such as alkyds, phenoHcs, urea —formaldehyde maleics, and adipates, and naturally occurring gums, such as shellac, paraffin waxes, rosin, and manila. In solvent mixtures they dissolve cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, and ceUulosic ethers. [Pg.376]

Protective coatings are the fourth major user of rosin, either directly or in a modified or derivative form. Varnishes and alkyds are the most common types of protective coatings using rosin. Rosin is combined with a heat-reactive phenol-formaldehyde resin to produce a widely used varnish. Printing inks also use substantial amounts of rosin. [Pg.1288]

By far the greatest market for this pigment, especially the rosinated grade, is in the printing ink market, where red lake C is known as a warm red, due to its distinct yellow shade. Within the plastics industry red lake C offers an economical azo red that finds use in LDPE and polyurethane where the end use allows such a pigment with relatively poor durability properties to be used as the system colorant. [Pg.105]

Use Hot-melt and pressure-sensitive adhesives, mastics and sealants, varnishes, ester gum, soldering compounds, core oils, insulating compounds, soaps, paper sizing, printing inks, polyesters (formed by reaction of the conjugated acids of rosin with acrylic acid, followed by reaction with a glycol). [Pg.1096]

The aspects relevant to the use of rosin as such, or one of the derivatives arising from its appropriate chemical modification as monomer or comonomer [12-14], have to do with the synthesis of a variety of materials based on polycondensations and polyaddition reactions of structures bearing such moieties as primary amines, maleimides, epoxies, alkenyls and, of course, carboxylic acids. These polymers find applications in paper sizing, adhesion and tack, emulsification, coatings, drug delivery and printing inks. [Pg.6]

Calcium soaps are also produced by reacting molten natural resins at temperatures above 200 °C with quick- or slaked lime. Calcium rosinate is used in the formulation of printing inks, principally for gravure and screen printing [31.16]. Calcium soaps are used as ... [Pg.360]

Only a limited amount of resin can be added to white paints due to its intrinsic color. Addition of these hard resins increases the hardness and the gloss of the paint films, accelerates and improves the drying of oxidatively cross-linking alkyd resins, and optimises sanding properties and corrosion protection in putties. Modified phenolic resins have lost much of their importance because they have been replaced by more efficient binder systems (e.g., thermoplastic and cross-linkable acrylic resins, polyurethane systems). Rosin-modified phenolic resins are, however, still extremely important in the production of resins for printing inks. [Pg.90]

In the THM-GC profile of the printing ink resin, dimethyl fumarate (peak 6) is detected, suggesting the presence of maleic or fumaric acid. Pentaerythritol is indicated by the presence of the tetra- and trimethyl ethers (peaks 7 and 8, respectively). Tertiary butyl phenol and methyl and dimethyl tertiary butyl phenols are detected as their methyl ethers (peaks 9, 10, and 11, respectively). Rosin acid methyl esters are detected with dehydroabietic acid and abietic acid methyl esters predominating (peaks 15 and 16, respectively). This resin is therefore diagnosed... [Pg.195]
