However, the development of a western European chemical industry (Chapter 24) brought increasing importance to coal tar as a source of the precursors that were to be used for the synthesis of dyes as well as raw materials for the production of solvents, pharmaceuticals, synthetic fibers, and plastics (Karr, 1963 Weiler, 1963 Aristoff et al., 1981 McNeil, 1981). Coal tar can also be upgraded to gasoline and other liquid fuels.
