Demand for n-butanol as n-butyl acetate accounts for about 13 percent of domestic consumption of the alcohol. This acetate ester is a general purpose coatings solvent with particular application in nitrocellulose lacquers and moisture cured urethane coatings formulations. n-Butyl acetate is the traditional medium boiling solvent for nitrocellulose lacquers and, as such, is the standard by which other solvents are compared. [Pg.88]

Primary alcohols when heated to 175 190° with urea give 43-60% yields of urethanes.Alcohols below n-butyl require pressure. The reaction probably goes through the intermediate cyanic acid obtained by decomposition of the urea. The reversible reaction HNCO + ROH NHjCOjR is well known, and urethanes are sometimes prepared by the exchange reaction of an alcohol and another urethane. ... [Pg.775]

Proteases, such as thermitase, papain,f " l and subtilisinf have been employed for the deprotection of tert-butyl and methyl esters from various glycopeptides. More interestingly, the C-terminus of a nucleopeptide methyl ester 8 was deprotected selectively and in very high yield by papain.l Neither the acetate, the N-terminal urethane, the allyl phosphate, nor the phenylacetamide protection of the nucleobase were attacked (Scheme 17). [Pg.306]

Baker and Gaunt found that the reaction between various alcohols and phenyl isocyanates in di-n-butyl ether and in benzene followed essentially second-order kinetics (first order with respect to the alcohol and to isocyanate concentration) as long as the reactants were in equimolar concentration. The second-order velocity constant calculated on the basis of such kinetics, however, increased with increasing (excess) alcohol concentration, indicating that the alcohol acted as its own catalyst. Baker and Gaunt postulated that the first step of the reaction was the formation of a complex (C) between the alcohol and the isocyanate and that in the second step this complex then reacted with a second molecule of alcohol to form the urethane and a free alcohol molecule according to... [Pg.404]

Hybrid aqueous dispersions were prepared containing both acrylic resins and polyurethane to provide enhanced properties for coating applications. Nanosized (approximately 50 mn) hybrid latexes were prepared at 30 C by the redox-initiated miniemulsion polymerisation of n-butyl methacrylate monomer in the presence of a urethane prepolymer. A stabiliser, of low molecular weight and low water solubility, was required to obtain stable particles of the required size. 7 refs. [Pg.46]
