It will be clear from the material presented earlier that 2D similarity searching (either in its basic form or in its subsimilarity or supersimilarity forms) has become a standard retrieval option in chemical information systems...

Another important option is a truncation symbol. If we ask for NUCLEOPHILE we will find all entries that contain the term nucleophile, but not those that contain a different form of this term (e.g., nucleophilic). We can take care of this by using NUCLEOPHIL as a search term instead of NUCLEOPHILE. This will retrieve all terms that start with the letters NUCLEOPHIL, no matter what other letters follow, thus retrieving nucleophilic, nucleophilicity, nucleophiles, and so on, as well as nucleophile. The question mark is one of several truncation symbols, each of which serves a different function. 

When the first of our new pilot plants was designed we had the option of full computer control. We decided to Install stand-alone solid state controllers and safety systems to allow the fullest operating flexibility and the best possible data retrieval. The computers chosen for the latter have the capability when we wish to control temperature, pressure or feeds using our own algorithms. 

The Penumbra stroke system (Penumbra Inc., San Leandro, CA) includes two different revascularization options (1) thrombus debulking and aspiration may be achieved by a reperfusion catheter that aspirates the clot while a separator device fragments it, and (2) direct thrombus extraction may be performed by a ring retriever while a balloon guide catheter is used to temporarily arrest flow. This system has been tested in a pilot trial in Europe. Twenty patients (mean NIHSS 21) with a total of 21 vessel occlusions (7 ICA, 5 MCA, and 9 Basilar) were treated up to 8 hours after symptom onset. Recanalization prior to lA lysis was achieved in all cases (48% TIMI 2 52% TIMI 3). Seven patients were also treated with lA UK or rt-PA. Good outcome at 30 days (defined as mRS < 2 or NIHSS 4-point improvement) was demonstrated in 42%. The mortality rate was 45%, but there were no device-related deaths. There was one asymptomatic SAH and three symptomatic ICHs. A prospective, single-arm, multicenter trial is being conducted in the United States and Europe currently. 

The current version of eChemPortal offers the possibility to retrieve information by searching on chemical names or CAS Registry numbers. The second phase will incorporate additional search options to retrieve and compile specific hazard or other effects data (e.g., toxicity endpoints) from the participating databases. 

Some utilities are providing long-term on-site dry cask storage others are negotiating with Native American nations for storage on reservations, while others propose shipment of spent fuel to Yucca Mountain for interim, retrievable storage. But these options do not address waste disposal and will not convince an informed public that the waste problem has been solved. 

Now, go to the LTI Viewer window and select Import under the File pull-down menu. A dialog box will pop out to help import the transfer function objects. By default, a unit step response will be generated. Click on the axis with the right mouse button to retrieve a popup menu that will provide options for other plot types, for toggling the object to be plotted, and other features. With a step response plot, the Characteristics feature of the pop-up menu can identify the peak time, rise time, and settling time of an underdamped response.

Scatter search has been implemented in software called OPTQUEST (see www.opttek.com). OPTQUEST is available as a callable library written in C, which can be invoked from any C program, or as a dynamic linked library (DLL), which can be called from a variety of languages including C, Visual Basic, and Java. The callable library consists of a set of functions that (1) input the problem size and data, (2) set options and tolerances, (3) perform steps 1 through 3 to create an initial reference set, (4) retrieve a trial solution from OPTQUEST to be input to the improvement method, and (5) input the solution resulting from the improvement method back into OPTQUEST, which uses it as the input to step 7 of the scatter search protocol. The improvement method is provided by the user. We use the term improvement loosely here because the user can simply provide an evaluation of the objective and constraint functions. 

Therefore, we have two options. We can write a test harness that performs the requisite sequences and checks the postconditions by comparing states before and after, or we can perform the equivalent checks manually by following a written test procedure. This is a matter of policy in your project. Each approach will be appropriate in different circumstances. Either way, you are systematically defining test sequences based on refinement of abstract actions. And, either way, the documented action conformance should be used to guide the creation of the tests, and the retrievals (whether only documented or actually coded as we saw earlier) provide the mapping between the different levels of the model. 

PC-Based Information Products Floppy Disk Based. We currently have ready access to a rapidly growing variety of relevant information resources. From a current awareness perspective, an excellent source of weekly information is the floppy disk-based product called Current Contents on Diskette (CCOD). Several versions are available however, the Life Sciences version is most appropriate for this review because of its coverage, on a weekly basis, of over 1200 journals describing work in the biological sciences. One will note that the product has several useful features, including very quick retrieval of article citations as well as several output options (including either hard copy or electronic storage of references as well as reprint requests). 

But even a small-scale trial-and-error strategy has to be organised within society. As discussed in the previous section, iimovations are rather improbable and disadvantaged by stractural frameworks. Iimovations depend upon freedom for them to be developed. At the same time safety barriers have to be formulated within which the search process can move freely. For example, possible environmental effects must be anticipated, necessitating controlled release in small increments and retrievability must be ensured. (Quantitative and qualitative restrictions must be imposed so that retrieval and repair options can still be effective if a trial is aborted. This approach is more successful if the persistence and spatial range of a chemical is low than for persistent chemicals like CFCs and PCBs. This requires that limited Teaming spaces or experimentation spaces have to be created intentionally under technical and economic risk considerations. Small increments and a steady increase are to be preferred, accompanied by intensive monitoring of detectable consequences. 

While the protocol described above has proven very useful in its own right, it often serves as the first step in designing custom protocols for a team. Once a user is satisfied with the results returned by the ad hoc query, the next step is often to hardwire these queries into a protocol that provides one-button access to all the pertinent data for a project. Figure 5 shows such a protocol used to retrieve data for several assays in a Neuroscience project. This protocol highlights an additional filtering option that we make use of in many of our protocols. The text box ( selected cmpds from list ) (7) supports the input of a list of identification numbers (in our case either jnjnumber or batchid ). This allows data to be retrieved on select compounds as opposed to all those tested in the assays. This feature is very popular and involves the use of Perl within the Pipeline Pilot protocol. All this work is done on the server and the results are written to a SD file that can be downloaded to the desktop. At this stage either DIVA or Accord for Excel is typically used to view the files. 

Table 9.10 shows the distribution of U.S. household incomes, which limits what each household can afford to buy. Let us consider baby diapers. A mother has a number of options to consider cloth diapers delivered to the home and retrieved after use, cloth diapers that are home laundered, disposable paper diapers for the garbage can after use, and the rural poor may let the babies run around with bare bottoms. The poor families buy less goods, and need to concentrate purchases on housing and basic food, such as bread and potatoes. The expenditure of 456 for disposal diapers in a budget of 75,000 is 0.6%, which is not a serious problem but for families with less than 10,000 income per year, this sum becomes 4.5%, which represents a much bigger burden, and less expensive and affordable options would be chosen.
