American native

A remarkable instance of this appeared in the case of the late Colonel Byrd, who was sent to the Cherokee nation to transact some business with them. It happened that some of our disorderly people had just killed one or two of that nation. It was therefore proposed in the council of the Cherokees that Colonel Byrd should be put to death, in revenge for the loss of their countrymen. Among them was a chief named Silduee, who, on some former occasion, had contracted an acquaintance and friendship with Colonel Byrd. He came to him every night in his tent, and told him not to be afraid, they should not kill him. After many days deliberation, however, the determination was, contrary to Silduee s expectation, that Byrd should be put to death, and some warriors were despatched as executioners. Silduee attended them, and when they entered the tent, he threw himself between them and Byrd, and said to the warriors, This man is my friend before you get at him, you must kill me. On which they returned, and the council respected the principle so much as to recede from their determination. [Pg.501]

So far the Count de Buffon has carried this new theory of the tendency of nature to belittle her productions on this side of the Atlantic. Its application to the race of whites, transplanted from Europe, remained for the Abbe Raynal. 0 doit Itre etonne que I Amerique n aitpas encore produit un bon poete, un habile mathematicien, un hotnme de genie dans un seul art, ou une seule science. 7. There are various ways of keeping truth out of sight. Mr. Rittenhouse s model of the planetary system has the plagiary appellation of an orrery and the quadrant invented by Godfrey, an American also, and with the aid of which the European nations traverse the globe, is called Hadley s quadrant. [Pg.506]

The territories of the Powhatan confederacy, south of the Patow-mac, comprehended about 8,000 square miles, 30 tribes, and 2,400 warriors. Captain Smith tells us, that within 60 miles of James town were 5,000 people, of whom 1,500 were warriors. From this we find the proportion of their warriors to their whole inhabitants, was as 3 to 10. The Powhatan confederacy, then, would consist of about 8,000 inhabitants, which was one for every square mile being about the twentieth part of our present population in the same territory, and the hundredth of that of the British islands. [Pg.509]

Besides these were the Nottoways, living on Nottoway river, the Mehirrins and Tilteloes on Meherrin river, who were connected with the Indians of Carolina, probably with the Chowanocs. [Pg.509]

Crude preparations of mescaline (61) from peyote were first reported by the Spanish as they learned of its use from the natives of Mexico during the Spanish invasion of that country in the sixteenth century. The colorful history (44) of mescaline has drawn attention to its use as a hallucinogen and even today it is in use among natives of North and South America. Although in connection with dmg abuse complaints, mescaline is considered dangerous, it has been reported (45) that it is not a narcotic nor is it habituating. It was also suggested that its sacramental use in the Native American Church of the United States be permitted since it appears to provoke only visual hallucination while the subject retains clear consciousness and awareness. [Pg.541]

In a departure from his usual and highly popular westerns, author Louis L Amour wrote a novel in 1987, Best of the Breed (Bantam Press), in which a military pilot of native American ancestry is shot down over the former Soviet Union and is forced to use the survival skills of his ancestral culture to escape his enemies. On the rare occasions when he is able to trap and kill an animal for food, he selectively eats the fat, not the meat. Based on your reading of this chapter, what is his reasoning for doing so ... [Pg.257]

It takes 20 to 40 L of sap to yield one liter of maple syrup. To remove the water, you could freeze the sap, as the Native Americans did 300 years ago. The ice that forms is pure water by discarding it, you increase the concentration of sugar in the remaining solution. Large-scale operators today use reverse osmosis to remove about half of the water. The remainder must be boiled off. The characteristic flavor of maple syrup is caused by compounds formed on heating, such as... [Pg.277]

People who abuse inhalants are found in both urban and rural settings. Adverse socioeconomic conditions, rather than racial or cultural factors per se, account for most reported ethnic differences in rates of inhalant abuse. Native American youths living on reservations typically have higher rates of inhalant abuse than youths both in the general population and among Native Americans who do not live on reservations (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration 1996). [Pg.271]

In some Asian populations and Native Americans, alcohol consumption results in increased adverse reactions to acetaldehyde owing to a genetic defect of mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase. [Pg.214]

Lactose intolerance is responsible for many cases of acute diarrhea, especially in patients of African descent, Asians, and Native Americans. Foods should be considered as possible causes, especially fat substitutes, dairy products, and products containing non-absorbable carbohydrates. [Pg.312]

The 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine is recommended for use in all adults 65 years of age or older and adults less than 65 years who have medical comorbidities that increase the risk for serious complications from S. pneumoniae infection, such as chronic pulmonary disorders, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, chronic liver disease, chronic renal failure, functional or anatomic asplenia, and immunosuppressive disorders. Alaskan natives and certain Native American populations are also at increased risk. Children over the age of 2 years may be vaccinated with the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine if they are at increased risk for invasive S. pneumoniae infections, such as children with sickle cell anemia or those receiving cochlear implants. [Pg.1245]

Native Americans had several innovative uses for the wood. The Shasta Indians used it to make, a special knife to out the umbilical cord of a newborn. [Pg.23]

The pith was used by Native Americans as a moxibustion sort of treatment, where the herb is burned to cause heat on a particular part of the body. Modern-day biologists still use elder pith to hold scientific specimens as it can easily be sliced. The pith has also been used for electrical experiments and in toy making. The hollowed elder stalk has also been used as a smoking tube, especially for the inhalation of specific herbal medicines in both early America and Europe. [Pg.24]

Native American people have also recognized the feminine attributes in the elder tree. The Ogimauikwe call her "the headwoman s tree." It is suggested that one should visit her, perhaps bringing a gift of tobacco, and talk to her about what is bothering you. [Pg.81]

Over the next 30 years, Patterson used mass spectroscopy and clean laboratory techniques to demonstrate the pervasiveness of lead pollution. He traced the relationships between America s gas pump and its tuna sandwiches, between Roman slaves and silver dimes, and between Native American Indians and polar snows. He forged as close a connection between science and public policy as any physical scientist outside of medical research. He made the study of global pollution a quantitative science. And marrying his stubborn determination to his passionate conviction that science ought to serve society, Patterson never budged an inch. [Pg.180]

Some utilities are providing long-term on-site dry cask storage others are negotiating with Native American nations for storage on reservations, while others propose shipment of spent fuel to Yucca Mountain for interim, retrievable storage. But these options do not address waste disposal and will not convince an informed public that the waste problem has been solved. [Pg.73]
