In this paper, I will address two different perspectives on government-university-industry relationships. The first is collaboration on matters of policy through the operations of the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable. I will describe the purposes, essential features, and accomplishments of the Roundtable. The second is programmatic collaboration in research and education. Here I will present the principal observations on university-industry cooperative programs that have emerged from several Roundtable activities on this topic. ... [Pg.42]

The Govemment-University-Industry Research Roundtable, sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine, was established in 1984 as an alternative to the traditional study commission approach to science and technology policy issues. The vision of all those involved in the initial concept was tha the Roundtable "could accomplish what present structures have been unable to do" in addressing major policy issues, problems, and opportunities in the research associations between universities and their principal partners, industry and government. [Pg.42]

As emphasized above, two important workshops held in 2001 identified a number of data gaps and research needs to advance the state-of-the-science for assessing the potential for dit.161719 30 Moreover, participants in a 2003 roundtable discussion emphasized that a number of important research efforts are currently underway in the areas of DIT, examining immune system responses following developmental exposures to known immunotoxicants.38... [Pg.358]

Another question is whether an endpoint reflecting the status of CMI should be included in any DIT protocol.1719 For the measurement of CMI, roundtable participants suggested that a validated DTH or T-cell responses to anti-CD3 be evaluated.38 The DTH assay is considered by the NTP as part of the Tier II test panel.3 Although reports indicate that the delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response can be assessed in weanling rats.41 roundtable participants agreed that data are lacking as to whether cell-mediated immune (CMI) assessments in younger animals are feasible.38 Ultimately, the characterization of a validated endpoint which measures CMI, and the determination of whether such an endpoint should be an essential part of a DIT framework remain critical research needs. [Pg.358]

The survey of reactions used to prepare small-molecule APIs [9] highlighted reactions warranting research to identify greener options for the process chemist, and a subsequent paper by members of the ACS Roundtable substantially expanded this perspective [12]. The following subsections focus on three chemical transformation areas requiring future development, but the reader is referred to the Roundtable reference for a more extended discussion. [Pg.339]

Roundtable members published a common industry view on key areas of green chemistry research [12]. Each year the Roundtable awards a research grant to an academic to work on one of the priority research areas identified by its members. These grants are open to any academic and are awarded by a research panel comprising selected members of the Roundtable. A list of research areas funded so far is presented in Table 16.2. It should be noted that any results of these Roundtable projects are to be published, for all to adopt, free from any IP license. [Pg.351]

The Roundtable seeks to influence the research agenda, and also has adopted a pohcy of supporting fundamental research into areas of chemistry defined as ripe for improvement as directed by its members. At the time of writing, the grants given are as shown in Table 16.2. [Pg.352]

It is a privilege to be part of this Chemical Sciences Roundtable program with the National Academy of Sciences. The goal of this presentation is to demonstrate that external research programs with collaborators at universities and national laboratories can accelerate the industrial research and development (R D) process. The essential criteria to realize this goal will be considered and illustrated with several examples that led to accelerated commercialization and some that did not. [Pg.64]

Ned D. Heindel, Lehigh University The Chemical Sciences Roundtable met here a couple of weeks ago, and we heard from several of our friends from the National Institutes of Health and research corporations that big pharmaceutical firms have very recently changed their position on the patent story. You indicated on one of your slides that you have an aggressive tech transfer office that would seek to obtain those patents, take care of the cost, and protect the technology early on. What we have been hearing from big pharma is that if you have a patent, don t come to us. There isn t enough time running on it for us to take it to a commercial product. So if you patent a pharmaceutically related product, the industry is not interested. [Pg.79]
