National interest

This is not a task for universities only the best option is to formulate funding for the cooperation of (a) national laboratories, for the large amounts of necessary practical developments (b) industries, to articulate market needs and to cooperate in the transfer of knowledge and manufacturing methods and (c) universities, to produce the basic knowledge needed to interest national laboratories...

With my European background, I was when I came to America and still am impressed by the rather loosely organized, more decentralized way of research support. Of course, even in a great country like ours resources are not limitless and inevitably prevailing trends of research set priorities. Salmon, mostiy Atiantic salmon, are produced in Canada, Chile, Norway, New Zealand, Scotiand, and the United States. Fishes in the family Cichhdae which includes several cultured species of tilapia, are reared primarily in the tropics, but have been widely introduced throughout both the developed and developing world.

In the words of a recent paper on MSE education (Flemings and Cahn 2000), chemistry departments have historically been interested in individual atoms and molecules, but increasingly they are turning to condensed phases .
