The following miscellaneous esters have been prepared as protective groups, but they have seen little use since publication of the first edition. Therefore they are simply listed for completeness, rather than described in detail. 

If some fields may be empty in the sublevels, all the fields in the main level are required for each entry. A new chiral separation record can be added in CHIRBASE solely if the authors correctly identify both sample and CSP. Since the beginning of the project, our policy has been to contact the authors of all publications containing incomplete, ambiguous or inconsistent data and to ask for additional information. Providing the separations with unique case numbers helps us considerably in this essential task, and also facilitates avoiding redundancies in the database. When chiral separations are reported for the second time in a new publication with exactly the same chromatographic conditions, this is stated in a footnote added in the field comments . In this field, miscellaneous information that cannot appear elsewhere are listed (detection limit, description of a reported chromatogram, racemization study, mobile phase limitations, etc.). 

In recent years there has appeared a considerable volume of literature dealing with nitrations. The expl-oriented publications on nitrations can be divided, albeit somewhat arbitrarily, into three general headings nitration mechanisms TNT production and miscellaneous nitrations, ie, production and prepn of expls other than TNT. Studies of nitration mechanisms were summarized in the preceding section. Recent investigations on expl production and prepn via nitration will be presented below in chronological order TNT Production...

The Web sites for online MCS support groups, e-mail lists, news-groups and chat rooms change from time to time. Those listed here were current at the time of publication. The best way to locate online support is to visit MCS-related Web sites that provide links. The Washington State MCS Network and the Environmental Health Network (see Miscellaneous Resources below) are two examples. 

The hydrogen content, heat of combustion, specific heat, and thermal conductivity data herein were abstracted from Bureau of Standards Miscellaneous Publication 97, Thermal Properties of Petroleum Products. These data are widely used, although other correlations have appeared, notably that by Linden and Othmer (Chem. Eng. 54[4, 5], April and May, 1947). 

Since the publication of the third edition, additional data have been critically reviewed. New or additional data included in this edition are bioconcentration factors, aquatic mammalian toxicity values, degradation rates, corresponding half-lives in various environmental compartments, ionization potentials, aqueous solubility of miscellaneous compounds, Henry s law constants, biological, chemical, and theoretical oxygen demand values for various organic compounds. Five additional tables have been added Test Method Number Index, Dielectric Values of Earth Materials and Fluids, Lowest Odor Threshold Concentrations of Organic Compoimds in Water, and Lowest Threshold Concentrations of Organic Compounds in Water.

The same 25-yr period, 1941-1966 was examined in a PhD thesis at the University of Georgia by Harold B. Jones, Jr., of the USDA s Economic Research Service. He found thatby 1966,9% of the projects undertaken by the regional laboratories had produced an economic return. That figure compared favorably with returns on food industry research. The cost-benefit ratio was 20 to 1 or better (cited in Always Something New A Cavalcade of Scientific Discovery, USD A, Agricultural Research Service, Miscellaneous Publication 1507. November 1993). 

Most of the compounds that had been reported (before March, 1942) to show cleavage oxidation by periodic acid are recorded in the table the substances are listed alphabetically in the following groups of related compounds (1) carbocyclic compounds (2) carbohydrates (3) a-diketones and a-ketols (4) hydroxyamino compounds (5) polyhydroxy and hydroxyketo acids (6) polyhydroxy alcohols (7) steroids (8) miscellaneous compounds. French journals after May, 1940, and the majority of other foreign publications after June, 1941, were unavailable for the survey.
