Two beech pieces were bonded together with an overlap of 10 mm as follows. The adhesive was applied in sufficient quantity at one end of one beech piece, which was then placed on the lower surface of a PTFE plastic mould shaped like a tiny staircase (Figure 20). The top step of the mould was higher than the lower one by a thickness which corresponded to the total height of the first beech piece and the required thickness of the adhesive. The second beech piece was then pressed on the top step of the mould with an overlap of 10 mm over the lower beech piece. The gap between the two pieces corresponded to exactly the adhesive thickness required. [Pg.124]

Handling, Storage, and Precautions is a stable, hygroscopic liquid which fumes copiously on exposure to moist air. Transfer under dry nitrogen is recommended. Contact with cork, rubber, and plasticized materials will cause rapid discoloration of the acid and deterioration of the materials. Elastomers are not typically recommended for use with ozone. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) plastics are the only acceptable material. Viton or Hypalon can be used but with low life expectancy. Rubber and synthetic rubber compounds are prohibited and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is not recommended. All elastomeric parts need to be cleaned for ozone service. [Pg.565]

Dry chlorine has a great affinity for absorbing moisture, and wet chlorine is extremely corrosive, attacking most common materials except HasteUoy C, titanium, and tantalum. These metals are protected from attack by the acids formed by chlorine hydrolysis because of surface oxide films on the metal. Tantalum is the preferred constmction material for service with wet and dry chlorine. Wet chlorine gas is handled under pressure using fiberglass-reinforced plastics. Rubber-lined steel is suitable for wet chlorine gas handling up to 100°C. At low pressures and low temperatures PVC, chlorinated PVC, and reinforced polyester resins are also used. The PTFE micropowders are commonly used in plastics, inks, lubricants, and finishes such as lacquer. Lubricants containing micropowders are used for bearings, valve components, and other moving parts where sliding friction must be minimized or eliminated. Nonstick finishes that require good release properties, for example, in the food and packaging industry, commonly use PTFE micropowders. [Pg.355]

Liquid polyalurninum chloride is acidic and corrosive to common metals. Suitable materials for constmction of storage and handling facilities include synthetic mbber-lined steel, corrosion resistant fiber glass reinforced plastics (FRP), ceramics, tetrafluoroethylene polymer (PTFE), poly(vinyhdene fluoride) (PVDF), polyethylene, polypropylene, and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVG). Suitable shipping containers include mbber-lined tank tmcks and rail cars for bulk shipment and plastic-lined or aH-plastic dmms and tote bins for smaller quantities. Almost all commercial plastics find some use both dry and lubricated for sliding at low speeds and light loads the most commonly used thermoplastics are nylon, acetal resins, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Typical thermosetting resins for bearing appHcations are phenoHcs, polyesters, and polyimides. Industrial equipment is a continuing area of development for plastics. Pipes, pumps, valves and sight glasses, made from such materials as PVC, PTFE and poly-4-methylpent-l-ene, have become well established on account of their corrosion resistance. The nylons are used for such diverse applications as mine conveyor belts and main drive gears for knitting machines and paper-making equipment. The high thermal stability of the carbon-fluorine bond has led to considerable interest in fluorine-containing polymers as heat-resistant plastics and rubbers. The inability to process PTFE by conventional thermoplastics techniques has nevertheless led to an extensive search for a melt-processable polymer but with similar chemical, electrical, non-stick and low-friction properties. This has resulted in several useful materials being marketed, including tetrafluoro-ethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (Figure 13.1(d)), and, most promisingly, the copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoropropyl vinyl ether. As with other plastics materials, temperature has a considerable effect on mechanical properties. This is clearly illustrated in Figure 13.5 in the case of stress to break and elongation at break. Fluorinated polymers stand out sharply against other construction materials for their excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature stability. In this respect they are not only superior to other plastics but also to platinum, gold, glass, enamel and special alloys. The fluorinated plastics used in process plants are polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE), fluorinated ethylene/ propylene (FEP), polytrifiuoromonochlorethylene (PTFCE) and polyvinyl fluoride (PVF). They are much more expensive than other polymers and so are only economical in special situations [59]. [Pg.116]
