Polypropylene grafting

Two interesting developments should also be noted syndiotactic polypropylene produced by a novel metallocene system and polypropylene grafted with styrene and/or maleic anhydride marketed by Montell as Hivalloy. 

Polyethylene has been grafted with acrylic acid, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate//V,/V-dimethylacrylamide, or methacrylic acid//V,/V-dimethylacrylamide to yield supports (e.g. Figure 2.10) suitable for the synthesis of peptides [2,222-224] and other compounds [216,225,226]. A similar support, also suitable for the synthesis of peptides, is polypropylene grafted with hydroxypropyl acrylate [227]. These supports can be used as membranes or as crown-shaped pinheads (Multipin 2-4 mm diameter) with loadings of 1.2-2.2 pmol per crown. 

MWCNTs have been functionalized with n-butyllithium by Blake et al. and subsequently the modified CNTs were covalently bonded to a chlorinated polypropylene [184]. The polypropylene-grafted MWCNTs were used to produce ultra-strong CNT polymer composites.

Triallyl cyanurate is made from cyanuric chloride and allyl alcohol. Triallyl cyanurate is used as a comonomer to impart higher temperature resistance to polyesters. It also is used as an organic catalyst for polymer grafting reactions in the solid phase, including polypropylene-g-maleic anhydride (a polypropylene-graft copolymer) [184],...

Another example of encoding that does not interfere with chemistry was suggested in 1997 by Xiao and co-workers [38],The coding structure is an inert ceramic plate with a two-dimensional, laser-etched bar code. The encoded plate, which is a 3 mm X 3 mm square, is placed in the center of a laser optical synthesis chip (LOSC). The chip is a 1 cm X 1 cm square made of polypropylene grafted with polystyrene. The smallest possible size of the encoding ceramic plate is 0.5 mm X 0.5 mm. Unfortunately, the bar code cannot be modified during the coursa of the synthesis. 

Porous acrylonitrile—DVB copolymer further reacted with diamines or triamines provides a support for Cp 2ZrCl2—MAO catalysts.2 2 pjjg catalyst activity rivals that of silica-supported analogues and no adhesion of polymer to the reactor walls or stirrer was observed. Polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride allowed to react with MAO acts as a support for a variety of metallocenes. 3 The number of gels in the polymer is lower than when silica is used as the carrier. Porous vinylpyridine—DVB and poly(vinyl chloride) have also been reported as suitable support materials for metallocene catalysts.

The addition of a polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) compatibilizer into polypropylene-co-ethylene/polybutylene succinate blends and the subsequent irradiation allowed prevention of degradation mechanisms leading to mechanical stability. The cyclic anhydride group of the PP-g-MA first permitted compatibilizion of both polypropylene-co-ethylene and polybutylene succinate and a second action as an "energy sink."...

The wood flour pjartides of 425 microns (40-mesh) in size were kindly donated by American Wood fibers (Schofield, WI) and are constituted predominantly with p>onderosa pine, maple, oak, spruce, southern yellow pine, cedar. The wood was oven dried at 100°C for 24 h before processing to remove moisture. The isotactic polypropylene matrix (PP) has a density of 0.9 g/cm and a melt flow index of 2.5 g/10 min, it was provided by Solvay Co. Polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (MAPP) with an approximate maleic anhydride (MA) content of 3 wt. % was purchased from Aldrich Chemical Company, Inc. (Milwaukee, WI). All ingredients were used as received.
