A polymeric composition for reducing fluid loss in drilling muds and well cement compositions is obtained by the free radical-initiated polymerization of a water-soluble vinyl monomer in an aqueous suspension of lignin, modified lignins, lignite, brown coal, and modified brown coal [705,1847]. The vinyl monomers can be methacrylic acid, methacrylamide, hydroxyethyl acrylate, hydroxypropyl acrylate, vinylacetate, methyl vinyl ether, ethyl vinyl ether, N-methylmethacrylamide, N,N-dimethylmethacrylamide, vinyl sulfonate, and additional AMPS. In this process a grafting process to the coals by chain transfer may occur. [Pg.46]

Gilsonite is active as a fluid loss additive because the permeability of cement is reduced. Latex additives also act as fluid loss additives. They also act as bonding aids, gas migration preventers, and matrix intensifiers. They improve the elasticity of the cement and the resistance to corrosive fluids [921]. A styrene-butadiene latex in combination with nonionic and anionic surfactants shows less fluid loss. The styrene-butadiene latex is added in an amount up to 30% by weight of the dry cement. The ratio of styrene to butadiene in the latex is typically 2 1. In addition, a nonionic surfactant (octylphenol ethoxylate and polyethylene oxide) or an anionic surfactant, a copolymer of maleic anhydride, and 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate [719] can be added in amounts up to 2%. [Pg.147]

The phase transition is directly related to the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance in a copolymer and controlling the polymer composition provides a highly effective way of tuning the LCST. Another example of responsive polymer libraries was based on the combination of 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate and DMA or A-acryloyl morpholine [50]. The nitroxide mediated copolymerization conditions were chosen on the basis of the kinetic investigation of the homopolymerizations, as discussed in this chapter (see, e.g., Sect. 2.1.2). [Pg.40]

Polyethylene has been grafted with acrylic acid, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate//V,/V-dimethylacrylamide, or methacrylic acid//V,/V-dimethylacrylamide to yield supports (e.g. Figure 2.10) suitable for the synthesis of peptides [2,222-224] and other compounds [216,225,226]. A similar support, also suitable for the synthesis of peptides, is polypropylene grafted with hydroxypropyl acrylate [227]. These supports can be used as membranes or as crown-shaped pinheads (Multipin 2-4 mm diameter) with loadings of 1.2-2.2 pmol per crown. [Pg.33]

Sulfonated styrene, maleic anhydride (SS/MA) has proved to be a popular inhibitor for calcium phosphate control in stabilized phosphate and other polyphosphate programs. As such, it competes with other calcium phosphate control technologies, such as acrylic acid, hydroxypropyl acrylate copolymer (AA/HPA) and acrylic acid, 2-acrylimido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AA/AMPS, or sometimes known as AA/SA), and acrylic acid, sodium 3-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropane sulfonate copolymer (AA/COPS). [Pg.165]
