Surface functionalisation of PE with succinic anhydride followed by derivatisation via ring opening reaction yielded surfaces with different functional groups [128]. The PE films were photochemically grafted with maleic anhydride in vapour phase in a reaction involving benzophenone and acetone at 60 °C for 5 h under UV irradiation with a 400 W mercury vapour lamp. The chemical transformation of PE film bearing succinic anhydride group is schematically presented in Scheme 8. [Pg.258]

PP is commercially modified by radical grafting with maleic anhydride to give maleated PPs used as compatibilizers for additives such as nanoclays. Similar strategies can be used to graft P-containing monomers to PPs. These copolymers, when blended with virgin PP, also allow com-patibilization with nanoclays but in addition work synergistically with the clays to improve flame retardance.51... [Pg.116]

The second system was based on two semi-crystalline polymers polypropylene and polyamide. To attain potential reactivity, polypropylene was first grafted with maleic anhydride and the results of this radicalar melt-grafting are presented. The final blend was obtained in one-step extruding of the two homopolymers and the reactive polypropylene. [Pg.72]

Eor polypropylene/polyamide/grafted rubber ternary blends, TEM was proved to be a good tool to study their phase morphology. Without grafting, EPR (217) or SEBS (218) formed dispersed particles together with the minor component of the blends separately however, after grafting with maleic anhydride they could encapsulate the dispersed minor component of the blends (214,217-221). [Pg.50]

GMA), acrylic acid (AA), or grafted with maleic anhydride (MAn). Hydrocarbon waxes, sometimes highly branched, are other compounds that may be blended with polyethylenes. [Pg.60]

To improve the compatibility in the ternary blends based on iPP and polyamides, different polymers grafted with maleic anhydride were added to the blend as interfacial modifier (20-24). Generally, the addition of the compatibihzer led to finer dispersion of the particles of the minor component and an upgrading of the mechanical properties of the blend. [Pg.123]

Porous acrylonitrile—DVB copolymer further reacted with diamines or triamines provides a support for Cp 2ZrCl2—MAO catalysts.2 2 pjjg catalyst activity rivals that of silica-supported analogues and no adhesion of polymer to the reactor walls or stirrer was observed. Polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride allowed to react with MAO acts as a support for a variety of metallocenes. 3 The number of gels in the polymer is lower than when silica is used as the carrier. Porous vinylpyridine—DVB and poly(vinyl chloride) have also been reported as suitable support materials for metallocene catalysts. [Pg.486]

The impact modification of aliphatic PAs has been known for a long time. Impact modifiers for PPA are acrylic polymers composed from of ethylene, n-butylacrylate, acrylic acid, and maleic anhydride. Other types of impact modifiers are ethylene propylene rubbers, grafted with maleic anhydride. ... [Pg.408]

The agave plant grown mainly in Mexico, used to make tequila and sweetener (and related to sisal), also supplies a waste fiber that has been used in PP at 55% loading. It is said to increase tensile modulus, and like other plant fibers, requires PP grafted with maleic anhydride for fiber/matrix coupling. [Pg.124]

In some cases, lack of noticeable influence of electron beam radiation on the values of tensile and Charpy impact strengths of 24-23-21-15-17 LDPE-HDPE-PP-PS-PET blends (based on recycled polymers) compatibilized with 1% trimethylol propane trimethylacrylate (TMPTMA) were found. Zenkiewicz et al. ° explained this lack of influence by the protective action of aromatic rings of PS and PET that hindered cross-linking. In the same article, the addition of 10% of styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene elastomer grafted with maleic anhydride (SEBS-g-MA) led to the great increase of both tensile and Charpy impact strengths. [Pg.281]

The wood flour pjartides of 425 microns (40-mesh) in size were kindly donated by American Wood fibers (Schofield, WI) and are constituted predominantly with p>onderosa pine, maple, oak, spruce, southern yellow pine, cedar. The wood was oven dried at 100°C for 24 h before processing to remove moisture. The isotactic polypropylene matrix (PP) has a density of 0.9 g/cm and a melt flow index of 2.5 g/10 min, it was provided by Solvay Co. Polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (MAPP) with an approximate maleic anhydride (MA) content of 3 wt. % was purchased from Aldrich Chemical Company, Inc. (Milwaukee, WI). All ingredients were used as received. [Pg.417]

Interesting results were reported by Mi et al. [19]. They analyzed polypropylene filled with bamboo fibers with the addition of polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride. The use of the agent promoting the adhesion was aimed at improving interactions between the components. In case of systems polypropylene/bamboo fibers/compatibilizer, the TCL has been formed. This was explained by higher ability to nucleation of bamboo fibers in relation to MAPP-grafted polypropylene as compared to pure polymeric matrix. [Pg.275]
